Position Description

The Farm Core Facility at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking a skilled and motivated Farm Associate to support agricultural and greenhouse operations for plant research activities. This role plays a critical part in maintaining plant health, supporting experimental work, and ensuring the smooth operation of field and controlled growing environments.


Position Responsibilities

  • Perform plant care activities including irrigation, fertilizing, and weeding
  • Conduct field work such as mowing, rototilling, and weed whacking
  • Assist with integrated pest management, including pesticide application
  • Prepare soil mixes according to recipes and fill flats for planting
  • Wash and maintain flats and pots for reuse
  • Maintain growth chambers, including changing lights and monitoring for pests
  • Perform general maintenance of agricultural and greenhouse equipment
  • Availability to work weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule

Position Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a plant science, agriculture, horticulture, or related "green" field preferred, or equivalent hands-on experience

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of agricultural or greenhouse experience required

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong agricultural and/or greenhouse skills
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of outdoor and greenhouse work
  • Experience or familiarity with greenhouse controller programming preferred
  • Basic computer skills for record keeping and data entry

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable bending, stretching, standing, and walking for extended periods
  • Ability to work with cleaning agents such as bleach
  • Willingness to work outdoors in sun, heat, and inclement weather
  • Regular exposure to sunlight and varying environmental conditions
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to operate a tractor with a clutch
  • NYS Pesticide Applicator's License preferred or willingness to obtain
