Location: Parkland: LL BLK 400

Work Schedule: 3rd Shift (Friday, Saturday, Sunday 7:00-7:30)

Primary Purpose

Supervises the sterilization of all items received by the assigned shift, and to respond to questions and problems as they arise to ensure that clean and sterile items are available as needed, and that the shift operates in an efficient manner.

Education

*Must have a High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience

*Must have four (4) years of experience in a Sterile Processing department.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

*Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) OR

*Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) OR

*Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) OR

*Certified Ambulatory Surgery Sterile Processing Technician (CASSPT) OR

*Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) OR

*Certified Flexible Endoscope Preprocessor (CFER) OR

*Certified Surgical Technician (CST) OR

*Prefer Certified in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) OR

*Certified in Sterile Processing Management (CSPM)

Skills or Special Abilities

*Must have a thorough understanding of sterilization techniques and procedures and of the equipment utilized in the department.

*Must have good communication skills, good organization skills and good problem-solving skills.

*Must be able to demonstrate effective supervisory skills.

*Must be able to operate a 10-key adding machine and possess keyboarding skills.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures supplies, instruments and surgical equipment needed for daily operations are available to meet the departments demands.
  • Supervises the sterilization of all items that are received by the department, responds to questions and problems as they arise, and ensures adherence to hospital policies and professional standards while maintaining the availability of equipment and instruments needed by the facility.
  • Schedules Sterile Processing Technicians for assigned shift, maintains productivity records and performs related tasks as required to ensure maximum utilization of resources and productivity.
  • Selects, trains, motivates, supervises and evaluates the Sterile Processing Technicians to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities, while providing optimal service to internal and external customers.
  • Performs routine equipment checks, monitors that employees are properly protected and maintains appropriate records to ensure that equipment will continue to perform in an optimum manner and to ensure the safety of the department employees.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the Sterile Processing field by attending seminars or workshops, and reading professional journals and integrates this knowledge as appropriate into the job.
  • Provides training as needed to ensure hospital policies, manufactures instructions and professional standards are being followed by the staff.
  • Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes/flows for the assigned Sterile Processing shift and implements appropriate changes to improve work effectiveness, productivity, and efficiency that support the overall goals of the Sterile Processing function and Parkland.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with other hospital departments to ensure that the responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Department are preformed in an expeditious and through manner.
  • Provides input to the development of the annual goals and objectives for the department that supports the mission and objectives of Parkland.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the Sterile Processing area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
  • Serves on various committees as assigned.

Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
