Description

Staff Archaeologist, Environmental, Austin, Texas

Halff is seeking a qualified Staff Archaeologist, based out of one of our Austin offices, to join our talented team of cultural resources professionals. The ideal candidate would bring at least two years of experience performing archaeological surveys with shovel testing in Texas. The position offers an excellent career development opportunity for someone looking to grow with Halff, with potential for not only business and personal growth, but ownership in the firm.

What you will do:

  • Conduct and document shovel tests in accordance with Texas survey standards, including recording metric depths, Munsell soil colors, soil textures, and identifying both precontact and historic-age cultural materials.
  • Conduct archaeological field surveys, including pedestrian survey, shovel testing, backhoe trenching, site documentation, and field data collection.
  • Receives instruction, guidance and direction from others.
  • Uses existing procedures to solve routine or standard problems.
  • Generates possible solutions to a problem.
  • Plans and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Conducts quality control over individual work prior to submitting for a second level review

What you will need:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field.
  • At least two years of demonstrable professional experience performing archaeological surveys with shovel testing in Texas.
  • Ability to identify basic cultural materials (e.g., lithics, ceramics, historic artifacts).
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks (walking long distances, digging, stooping, bending, lifting up to ~40 lbs).
  • Willingness to travel and stay overnight for fieldwork, as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols and instructions.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel experience, data entry, GPS, tablets; GIS familiarity a plus).
  • Technical writing experience and familiarity with ArcGIS Pro are not required but will strengthen a candidate's application; however, demonstrated willingness to develop both skill sets is essential.

While a background in archaeology is preferred, candidates with relevant experience in closely related fields - such as environmental consulting, geology, or other field-based sciences - may be considered if they demonstrate transferable skills applicable to cultural resources work.
