The Department of Mathematics at The University of Arizona seeks highly qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice in Statistics/Data Science. Highly qualified and experienced candidates may be considered for higher ranks. The primary role of the Assistant Professor of Practice is to create an engaging and meaningful learning experience for students in statistics and data science courses ranging from introductory undergraduate through master's degree-level. We are looking for individuals who are dedicated to providing high-quality instruction and who will bring enthusiasm and expertise to this endeavor.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to work with other faculty to contribute to, and be part of, an innovative teaching and learning environment and to help develop effective curricula for our Statistics and Data Science degree programs.

All positions are in person at the University of Arizona main campus in Tucson.

This is an academic-year, non-tenure-track teaching appointment. After an initial probationary period, multi-year contracts will be available, pending performance review. (A small portion of the workload assignment may be dedicated to research for candidates who wish to continue a research program.) The Professor of Practice series of titles includes Assistant, Associate, and Full ranks, and there is an opportunity for career progression and growth within this career track.

The expected starting salary is approximately $70,000 (9 months), depending on experience and qualifications.

This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • The primary responsibility is to teach in-person and online courses in the Statistics and Data Science Department. There is also the opportunity to teach classes in the professional master's program in Statistics and Data Science once that program is underway.
  • Incumbents are expected to participate in various departmental activities, such as tutoring and mentoring programs. Full-time appointments usually require teaching 6-9 credit hours each semester, depending on course demands and departmental needs.
  • After the first year, it is expected that incumbents will serve as a faculty advisor to several SDS undergraduate/graduate students.
  • Additional responsibilities include attendance at all appropriate course meetings, faculty meetings, committee meetings, and related professional development sessions.
  • There is a possibility of teaching in the summer for additional compensation, depending on availability of classes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in statistics or closely related field, with a strong background in coursework that aligns with our undergraduate curriculum.
  • Significant experience teaching in a university or college setting.
  • Working knowledge of the content areas of probability, statistical methods, generalized linear models, statistical computing, and machine learning.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience suited to teach the full range of undergraduate and introductory graduate courses in statistics/data science.
  • Experience teaching online courses.
  • Experience with curriculum development at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses in large format (100+ students).
