Job Description
AltaGas - Operator Trainee Working in accordance with AltaGas' safe work practices and EHS policies, the Operator Trainee will perform assigned tasks under the direct supervision of qualified Operations personnel. The Trainee shall make daily progress towards qualification for the Operator 4 position, which primarily supports the terminal's rail & truck unloading & loading operations. Ultimately, the Trainee will be required to qualify on the Operator 3 position, with the added responsibility of the terminal's high pressure storage and pipeline operations. The Operator 4 position is in the Yard Operator classification. You Will: The Operator Trainee is required to develop competency in the areas listed below. Tasks and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Follow all protocols for working safely, including around rail equipment and LPG
- Work at the direction of higher-level Operators to connect and disconnect trucks and railcars for unloading and loading LPG
- Ensure rail and truck loading and offloading activities take place in a safe and efficient manner; periodically monitor equipment throughout the loading/offloading operation
- Sample and test LPG products from trucks and tank cars
- Perform visual inspections of incoming and outgoing tank cars
- Complete required documents related to the inspection, unloading, and loading of tank cars.
- Apply thread sealant to the plugs for the liquid and vapor valves on ALL tank cars. This shall be done while monitoring the cars during the unloading/loading process
- Perform general housekeeping in the Truck Rack and Rail Rack areas, including regularly emptying trash containers and oily waste containers, refilling grease containers, keeping the area around the unloading compressors free of oil, and other housekeeping tasks
- Ensure that sampling tubes, sample cylinders, freeze testers and thermometers are brought out to the rail racks and truck rack when needed, and stored properly when not in use
- Other duties, as assigned by higher level Operators, in accordance with their level of training and qualification
- Assist with Weekly, Monthly & Quarterly Checklists on safety systems and equipment in areas of responsibility
- Work as part of a team and communicate effectively in multiple settings and scenarios
- Work as the Dock Assistant, as needed, and as assigned
- Must qualify on the positions of Operator 4 and Operator 3 within the amount of time set by the Company
- Must earn qualification as a Dock Assistant within the amount of time set by the Company
- Complete all required training on or before the assigned due date
- Understand, maintain competency on, and follow all Operating Procedures pertaining to their area of responsibility
- Provide direction, support, and assistance to other Operators and other employees, including contract employees, as needed
- Keep operating areas tidy and regularly perform general housekeeping duties
- Check their Company email account daily and read the Daily Notes for information & instructions
- Promptly communicate all safety issues, equipment malfunctions, near misses, and incidents to Management
- Perform any available work assigned by the Company
You Have: Basic/Required:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must have valid driver's license
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess or can qualify for a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
Must be willing and able to comply with the following:
- Work with safety as their top priority
- Work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Work overtime as needed and as directed
- Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and vaults
- Work near large, high-speed machines, operating at extreme temperatures
- Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toed boots, hard hat, ear and eye protection)
- Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and extreme temperatures
- Climb up to 100 feet in height
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Work outside in harsh weather conditions
- Read at a level sufficient to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits, and instruction manuals
- Learn, and gain proficiency with, computer software/programs associated with process operations and other job duties
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
Preferred:
- 1 or more years of direct experience working as a process operator or maintenance technician in a marine terminal, refinery, industrial, or plant process setting
- Certificate of Completion or higher in Process Technology from an accredited school or military certifications that are process operations related
- Record of formal emergency response training within the last 24 months
