Position Summary

Provides accounting oversight for CPS Energy to include proper accounting guidance implementation, and the development and monitoring of CPS Energy accounting policy, procedures, guidelines, and controls, including the development of white papers to support important accounting positions. Responsible for the proper accounting and comprehensive analytics for Retail Revenues and associated Bad Debt Expense and Allowance for Doubtful Accounts; Retail fuel costs; Wholesale revenues and related fuel costs and O&M by books and strategies; and Miscellaneous Receivables processing and analysis and contributes to the successful completion of CPS Energy's annual financial audit and clean opinion.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely, accurate and complete closing of monthly/annual accounting records and books, to include:
  • Proper recording and allocation of monthly expenditures related to operating and fuel activities, including ISO costs, bilateral purchases, congestion revenue rights, and hedging costs.
  • Timely and accurate completion of CPS Energy Sales, Revenue & Fuel/Gas Cost Summary schedules, and Revenue & Fuel information included in CPS Energy's Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Flow of Funds Board Schedules.
  • Calculation, analysis and reporting of retail Bad Debt Expense and Allowance for Doubtful Accounts.
  • Proper recording of Retail revenues by customer class and related analysis.
  • Calculation and analysis of Retail electric and Distribution Gas unbilled revenues.
  • Significantly contribute to the successful completion of CPS Energy audit and clean opinion, including:
  • Completion and review of account reconciliations
  • Completion and review of audit schedules and requests for information
  • Completion and review of the annual financial statements
  • Timely and accurate response to all other audit inquiries
  • Provide accounting oversight for CPS Energy. Responsibilities include:
  • Accounting guidance implementation
  • Accounting policy & white paper development
  • Developing and ensuring accounting policies, procedures, and guidelines are effective and implemented
  • Acts as a key liaison with the financial subject matter experts within the business units / areas to answer questions and address financial accounting issues.
  • Responsible for the proper accounting and comprehensive analytics for Retail and Wholesale revenues, fuel costs and related Wholesale O&M by books and strategies. Oversees preparation of PTSA, Generation Mix reports, and several Board Schedules.
  • Ensures timely, accurate and comprehensive recording and accounting for CPS Energy revenues and Nodal market cost allocations to include:
  • Complete and timely recording of retail and wholesale revenues, to include proper customer category classification.
  • Complete and timely recording of Nodal market fuel and regulatory costs, to include proper allocation to retail and wholesale market activities.
  • Timely, thorough, and understandable analysis of drivers to revenues and Nodal market cost allocations.
  • Provide and guide development of Revenue & Fuel Accounting staff, to include provision of learning and development opportunities, and cross training of staff to ensure adequate backup of all functions in the area.
  • Responsible for assisting with any enterprise resource systems and software as needed for business needs
  • Performs other duties, including leading and managing complex special projects, as assigned.

Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge and familiarity with monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting processes to include monthly and annual accounting close cycle, quarterly reporting, and financial statement audit.
Working knowledge of financial/utility operational process
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Foundational understanding of financial principles, financial statements and other applicable business operations.
Assertive self-starter, with ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, with a high degree of accuracy and ability to handle and/or manage sensitive and confidential information.
Evidence of strong planning and organization skills, essential for managing multiple tasks and large-scale projects of the section while ensuring timely and accurate completion.
Excellent organizational, analytical, planning, multi-tasking, negotiation, problem-solving, verbal, written & communicational skills.
Demonstrated ability to interact well with others (peers, co-workers, all levels of the organization and outside entities).
Demonstrated ability to contribute in a team environment, either as a team leader or team member.
Valid Class C Texas Driver's License & must have a favorable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or other related financial certification
  • Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics or other related business field
  • Proficient in SAP - preferred.

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field from an accredited university.
Required Certifications
Working Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Ability to travel to and from client meetings, training sessions and other business related events. After hours work may be required.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking & standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
