| Essential Job Duties |
The Oncology Veterinary Technician provides high-level clinical support and essential care coordination within the Medical Oncology service at the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center. This role is pivotal in delivering leading-edge diagnostics and multi-modal cancer treatments for canine and feline patients. The incumbent serves as a technical expert in chemotherapy administration, advanced diagnostic support, and anesthesia recovery, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and clinical excellence.
Beyond direct patient care, this position acts as a central communication and educational hub, bridging the gap between clinicians, students, and clients. By managing complex case workflows-from financial oversight to the instruction of veterinary residents and interns-this individual ensures the seamless delivery of compassionate, specialized care in a fast-paced academic environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence & Advanced Technical Care
Specialized Oncology Monitoring: Provide expert observation and nursing care for patients with complex pathologies, including Lymphoma, Osteosarcoma, and Mast Cell Tumors. Advanced Diagnostics & Procedural Support: Facilitate high-stakes procedures including bone marrow biopsies and mass aspirations; provide comprehensive surgical support through aseptic preparation and post-anesthetic recovery. Technical Mastery: Execute precise medical treatments, including venipuncture, IV catheterization, and moderate-risk drug calculations for CRIs and chemotherapy protocols. Diagnostic Imaging Collaboration: Utilize advanced equipment (IV pumps, pulse oximetry) while coordinating seamlessly with CT, MRI, and Radiology services.
Coordination, Instruction & Advocacy
Liaison & Case Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and referring veterinarians (rDVMs) to ensure clear communication and continuity of care. Educational Leadership: Direct the orientation and clinical coaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents, fostering a culture of continuous learning. Operational Oversight: Manage the full patient lifecycle within the hospital information system, including accurate billing, estimates, and diagnostic submissions. Safety & Compliance: Maintain a rigorous environment of safety, ensuring strict adherence to OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety protocols.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to frequently lift and transition patients weighing up to 50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations, to ensure safe patient handling and transport.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

| Preferred Qualifications |
Advanced Oncology Nursing: Demonstrated experience in the specialized care of canine and feline oncology patients, including a strong working knowledge of common malignancies such as Lymphoma, Osteosarcoma, and Mast Cell Tumors. Experience in a clinical/veterinary setting. Chemotherapy & Pharmacology Expertise: Proven proficiency in the safe administration of chemotherapy agents and the execution of complex medical calculations for Constant Rate Infusions (CRI) and multi-step drug protocols. Surgical & Diagnostic Support: Solid background in assisting with specialized procedures, including bone marrow biopsies and aseptic surgical prep, as well as providing expert post-anesthetic recovery and pain management. Clinical Mentorship & Instruction: Experience in a teaching hospital or high-volume specialty environment, with a focus on coaching veterinary students, interns, or junior clinical staff on technical skills and workflow. Comprehensive Case Management: Strong administrative and communication skills with a track record of coordinating complex patient visits, managing hospital information systems, and acting as a primary liaison between clients and referring veterinarians.
