Posting Summary
Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Business Counselor/Trainer. The Business Counselor/Trainer is responsible for providing counseling, coaching, mentoring, advisory services and training that will guide entrepreneurs and small business owners in starting, managing, and expanding their businesses. Specific areas of focus include: training and technical assistance in business planning, business strategic development, entity formation, digital marketing and sales strategy, financial management and access to capital, legal and compliance matters, certification and procurement readiness, human resources and talent management, cybersecurity, AI integration and digital transformation, operations and process improvement, exporting and international trade, assist with business information research on behalf of the clients, and industry-specific challenges such as manufacturing, retail, and food service.

Business Counselor/Trainer will additionally support the implementation of network-wide initiatives through engagement in activities that facilitate cross-functional coordination, stakeholder communication, and the ongoing alignment of programmatic efforts with strategic objectives.

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:

  • Utilizing critical thinking and analytical expertise to create customized strategies tailored to each small business client's specific needs through individualized one-on-one counseling
  • Developing and delivering group training sessions and webinars to disseminate knowledge and resources, depending on area(s) of specialty
  • Collaborating closely with other NJSBDC counselors to provide comprehensive client
    support
  • Staying informed on emerging trends, regulatory changes, and industry best practices relevant to the assigned specialty area
  • Deliver on assigned metrics for federal and state requirements
  • Engagement in activities that facilitate cross-functional coordination, stakeholder
    communication, and the ongoing alignment of programmatic efforts with strategic objectives.
  • Maintain and create new productive working relationships with key statewide small business
    stakeholders
  • Track and report outreach and consulting activities ensuring compliance with organizational
    guidelines
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, fostering collaboration and trust throughout the consulting process.


This position is contingent upon the continuation of grant funding.
FLSA Nonexempt
Salary Details $65 - $72 per hour

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Also requires a minimum of three to five years of relevant professional experience in an administrative and/or supervisory function, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.
- OR -
Requires a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education/experience in the discipline. A master's degree in a specialized discipline may be required, particularly in research, project management or managerial positions. Also requires a minimum of five years experience and/or increasing functional responsibility in a leadership/managerial role. With a master's degree requirement, a minimum of three years of related experience is acceptable. Excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as business consulting/management and training/facilitation/teaching/AI integration/CRM or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three to five years of relevant professional experience in entrepreneurs and small business enterprise consulting, advisory,training & business needs.
  • Practical hands on experience in having managed or operated a small business a plus.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialized training/ Licenses or Certifications in AI/Cybersecurity/International Trade a plus. See required knowledge, skills and abilities

Equipment Utilized

  • MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat and CRM software systems


Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • This position is primarily remote, with travel expected only when necessary to meet with small business clients at regional offices throughout the state, or to attend events, trainings, and outreach initiatives throughout the state
  • Travel amongst campuses may be required.
