Job Summary
The Inpatient Psychiatry Nocturnist provides comprehensive medical care and consultation to patients admitted to the psychiatric service during after-hours shifts at Bellevue Hospital. This critical role involves coordinating medical management for patients in the Psychiatry Emergency Department and inpatient psychiatry units. The Nocturnist works collaboratively with psychiatric attendings, nurse practitioners (NPs), and registered nurses (RNs), integrating expertise in internal medicine and psychiatric care.

Key Responsibilities



  • Medical Care: Deliver direct medical care and consultations for psychiatric patients in inpatient psychiatry and the psychiatric emergency room during overnight shifts.
  • Medical Clearances: Perform thorough history and physical examinations for psychiatric admissions requiring medical clearance.
  • After-Hours Consultation: Respond promptly to medical concerns raised by the psychiatry team during after-hours.
  • Communication & Handover: Provide accurate and comprehensive patient sign-outs to the day team at shift completion to ensure continuity of care.


Compliance and Documentation



  • Adhere to all hospital, departmental, and NYU policies and procedures.
  • Maintain up-to-date credentialing and complete required health assessments and documentation.
  • Document patient encounters and medical interventions meticulously in the electronic medical record (EMR), ensuring accuracy and compliance with institutional standards.


  • Education: Medical degree from an accredited institution.
  • Training: Completion of Internal Medicine residency training.
  • Experience: Demonstrated clinical competence in internal medicine; experience or interest in working with psychiatric populations is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
