The Physical Therapist Specialist is responsible for the provision of physical therapy services within her or his individual scope of clinical competence including: examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, development and implementation of a plan of care that includes direct intervention, communication, collaboration and patient education and the evaluation of outcomes. The PT Specialist is also responsible for upholding professional standards and promoting quality in practice.

The PT Specialist have full responsibility for the physical therapy management of their patients. They are responsible for maintaining competency and further development of their clinical skills, for supervising physical therapy students and for the teaching of that specialty to other staff and students.

In addition, the PT Specialist shares their physical therapy expertise and participate in the development of the role of physical therapy throughout the health system and within the community. The PT Specialist may supervise students in their clinical fieldwork. The PT Specialist is responsible for administrative tasks related to the patient care services they provide and required for regulatory and organizational compliance.

The PT Specialist has advanced certifications, participated in professional activities such as publications or presentations, and/or is actively engaged in departmental advancement activities such as committee or project work.

The PT Specialist also serves as administrative backup when the Coordinator, Assistant Director or Director are not on site.
The PT Specialist is a positive team influencer and 'go-to' person for assistance within areas of clinical specialty, departmental administrative tasks, and team/department/hospital projects.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Direct Patient Care time (actual time with patients, may vary from scheduled) - includes all direct interventions and patient education that is integrated as a part of treatment session
  • Indirect Patient Care (IPC) - time spent in chart review, documentation (direct patient care documentation as well as any other documentation related to patient care), scheduling, attending team or family meetings and rounds (documented as clinic time), ordering equipment, assisting other staff
  • Assist other team members, the department or organization with identified projects.
  • Resource clinically for other therapy staff.
  • Academic and Clinical Teaching
  • Administration (daily sheets, case presentations, staff meetings, block meetings, committee meetings,
    giving inservices)
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Current licensure as a Physical Therapist in Illinois from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation at time of employment
  2. Three (3) years (36 months) of professional clinical experience with a minimum of two years in their clinical specialty area
  3. Possession of a current/valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR Certification.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience providing physical therapy services in an Emergency Department setting, or a combination of inpatient and outpatient patient care with a focus on urgent or same-day care management.
  • Experience or training with the vestibular population
