Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive clinical and administrative support within a General Surgery and Vascular Clinic setting. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care throughout the pre-, intra-, and post-procedure process while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and continuity of care. The RN collaborates closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, referring offices, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate procedures, educate patients, and support efficient clinic operations.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and room patients, including obtaining, documenting, and updating relevant clinical information and medical histories.

  • Monitor patients throughout pre-, intra-, and post-procedure phases and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.

  • Assist providers with in-office vascular and surgical procedures, including airway management as needed.

  • Maintain sterile technique, including preparation of sterile fields and proper opening and handling of sterile supplies.

  • Safely transfer patients between procedure tables and stretchers using proper patient safety techniques.

  • Escort discharged patients via wheelchair and ensure safe discharge procedures are followed.

  • Provide clear and accurate pre-operative and post-operative instructions to patients and families.

  • Coordinate and schedule in-office procedures and surgical cases.

  • Verify insurance eligibility and obtain required prior authorizations/precertifications.

  • Communicate effectively with referring providers regarding patient status, treatment plans, and follow-up care.

  • Ensure timely transmission of visit notes, procedure documentation, and clinical updates to referring providers.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain a patient-centered approach to care.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligible compact state required.

  • Prior nursing experience required; surgical, vascular, procedural, or critical care experience preferred.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) strongly preferred.

  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider CPR certification required upon hire.

  • AHA ACLS Provider certification required within 90 days of hire.

Physical Requirements: Constant (67-100% of workday) walking, standing, use of arms and hands; frequent (34-66% of workday) bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting; ability to lift 35 lbs.; ability to push and pull 20 lbs.; auditory and visual skills to include color determination; ability to work in confined spaces; ability to reach above/overhead.

Mental Requirements: Possesses critical thinking and analytical skills. Ability to multi-task. Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team. Capacity to cope with difficult situations. Ability to tolerate irregular hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Environmental Requirements and Exposure Hazards: Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals. Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
