OVERVIEW:

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for maintenance and janitorial duties of the Harbor Light Center.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Take charge of facility operations when the Facilities Manager is unavailable
  • Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment at Harbor Light Center facilities
  • Complete minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC repairs
  • Diagnose and repair issues with lighting, heating, cooling, and appliances
  • Keep walkways, hallways, and common areas safe and well maintained
  • Oversee facility repairs and coordinate work with subcontractors and janitorial staff
  • Prepare rooms after move-outs and conduct move-in and move-out inspections
  • Maintain and repair HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems in collaboration with Janitors
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and support emergency planning
  • Provide regular written and verbal updates to the Facilities Manager and Executive Director
  • Follow all company safety policies to maintain a safe environment


  • Support deep cleaning tasks such as windows, floors, and power washing
  • Manage trash removal and ensure proper recycling


  • Identify and report safety hazards for correction
  • Inspect and maintain fire safety equipment
  • Respond quickly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs
  • Communicate major maintenance needs and coordinate contractor quotes
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, property records, and occupant information
  • Help prepare monthly and quarterly reports for leadership
  • Track repairs, room turnovers, and capital projects for timing and budget
  • Be available after hours and on weekends for emergencies
  • Other related duties as required


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:



  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Experience in building maintenance and repair work (1 year required)
  • CA Driver's license (required)
  • OSHA Safety Certification (within first ninety days of employment - company provided)
  • First Aid and CPR certification (within first seven days of employment - company provided)
  • Tuberculosis clearance (within first fourteen days of employment - company provided)


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  • Bilingual in Spanish (preferred)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Knowledge of property maintenance and repair practices
  • Basic skills in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of health and safety regulations
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries while working respectfully with vulnerable populations


EQUIPMENT USED:



  • Modern Office Equipment and Relevant Software
  • Relevant maintenance and janitorial equipment


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (usually file boxes)
