Data Team Lead: This is where you come in.

We're looking for a Data Team Lead to own MacDonald-Miller's data and analytics platform and the team that builds on it. This is a player-coach role: you'll directly lead our BI Analysts and Data Engineers while staying hands-on with the architecture, the hardest problems, and the most strategic deliverables.

We're a Microsoft shop investing heavily in Fabric as the foundation of our data platform. This team is focused entirely on data: building the warehouse that brings our information together, creating the semantic layer that defines how we measure the business, developing Power BI reports that support day to day decision making, and partnering closely with stakeholders to turn data into better business outcomes.

This role reports to the Senior Director of IT and directly leads the BI and data engineering team.

Top deliverables in the first year to be a hero:

  • Successfully lead the ERP data transition into Microsoft Fabric
Ensure historical and new ERP data flow together seamlessly so the business maintains trusted reporting through go-live.
  • Build a certified semantic layer
Create one trusted source for key metrics like revenue, margin, utilization, and labor hours across the company.
  • Become a strategic partner to business leaders
Understand what Construction, Service, Finance, and Operations leaders are trying to solve and deliver data that helps them make better decisions.
  • Modernize and simplify the Power BI environment
Refactor outdated reports, improve performance, and establish reporting standards and governance.
  • Create strong team operating standards
Implement clear sprint cadence, intake processes, documentation standards, code reviews, and prioritization methods.
  • Develop and grow the data team
Coach team members, create growth plans, and build a high-performing, accountable team culture.
  • Drive AI adoption across the team
Use tools like Copilot and ChatGPT to improve development speed, documentation, analysis, and overall team productivity.
  • Focus the team on business decisions, not just dashboards
Measure success by the impact the data has on business decisions and operational improvements.

Your Background: What kind of person will thrive in this role?

You should have...

  • 3+ years of experience in BI, analytics, or data engineering roles, with a proven track record of delivering production-ready solutions that drove meaningful business outcomes
  • Leadership experience - whether through direct people management, leading technical initiatives, or serving as the senior IC others relied on for guidance
  • Strong Power BI expertise, including advanced DAX, semantic modeling, and workspace governance
  • Strong SQL skills, including complex joins, stored procedures, query optimization, and working with large datasets
  • Hands-on experience within the Microsoft Azure data ecosystem, particularly Microsoft Fabric and/or Azure Data Factory
  • Experience designing and building data warehouses and dimensional data models
  • Experience developing ETL/ELT pipelines, including data cleansing, transformation, and validation processes
  • Proven ability to partner with non-technical business leaders by translating ambiguous business needs into actionable data solutions and influencing decision-making
  • Active, day-to-day use of AI tools to improve engineering productivity, analysis, documentation, and development workflows
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with executives, technical teams, and non-technical stakeholders

And everyone you work with should describe you as...

  • A great problem solver
  • A strong communicator to both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Passionate with a can-do attitude
  • Someone with high standards of customer service

And you should be motivated by...

  • Working with a results-oriented team to monitor and drive key performance indicators.
  • Personal growth by learning and becoming proficient in multiple new systems and technologies.
  • Having the ability to manage and complete work without micro-management or constant handholding.
  • Having fun in an environment high on transparency and open to innovative new approaches.
