Paid Time Off:

Starting Hourly Wage: $33.65 - $37.50/hour; depending on experience

Position Overview:

The Project Engineer plays a key role in supporting Project Managers by coordinating project activities, maintaining accurate documentation, and facilitating effective communication across teams. This role contributes to the success of fabrication projects by partnering with field supervisors, engineers, detailers, and leadership to help ensure quality, efficiency, and profitability. We lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability, put people first through collaboration and inclusivity, deliver client-focused value, and drive growth through innovation and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Support the bidding process and contribute to securing new projects by taking our clients' missions as our own, approaching each opportunity with curiosity, ownership, and a commitment to turning complexity into clarity.
  2. Assist with estimating and negotiating change orders with professionalism and precision, demonstrating deepening knowledge of our craft and strong attention to detail.
  3. Track and forecast labor hours and material costs and provide regular updates on overall project performance to ensure projects remain accurate, transparent, and financially aligned.
  4. Support procurement efforts for major equipment and subcontractor services reinforcing UMC's commitment to quality and reliable delivery.
  5. Monitor delivery timelines and help expedite key materials and equipment as needed to keep the project on schedule and support predictable outcomes for the field.
  6. Maintain a strong understanding of project contracts, scopes of work, and specifications with an ownership mindset and a focus on clarity.
  7. Organize and manage project documentation per company and contractual standards reflecting accountability and respect for process.
  8. Collaborate with field supervisors to plan and schedule project tasks, including subcontractor coordination, supporting teamwork and clear communication across all stakeholders.
  9. Review contract drawings, detailed drawings, and specifications to support project execution.
  10. Prepare work packages for fabrication shops, including drawing reviews, material takeoffs, procurement, and labor budget planning recognizing that dependability is essential to supporting both the team and the client.
  11. Ensure compliance with UMC's safety program on all job sites.
  12. Demonstrate reliable, regular attendance as an essential function of the role.
  13. Use project management and collaboration tools, including MS Outlook, Excel, Word, Bluebeam, Smartsheet, OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, BIM360, Viewpoint Team, Vista, and Revit.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain positive client, trust-based relationships throughout the project lifecycle, reflecting UMC's professionalism and customer-first mindset.
  2. Continue building knowledge of mechanical systems, including engineering, estimating, construction practices, and financial management, demonstrating growth, initiative, and long-term commitment to excellence.
Position Requirements

Required Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to accurately estimate mechanical work with an emphasis on clarity and precision.
  2. Strong collaboration and communication skills across diverse teams.
  3. Understanding of basic mechanical systems and the ability to explain them clearly to others.
  4. Excellent organization and time management.
  5. High attention to detail to reduce errors and manage financial risk.
  6. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Results-driven with a strong sense of accountability.
  8. Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities effectively.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and relevant project management software.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  1. None

Preferred Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor's degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field.
  2. 0-2 years of relevant experience required.

Required Licensing and Other Certifications:

  1. Maintain a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
