A Brief Overview
A Surgical Tech Service Leader Level 2 provides expert guidance in surgical procedures, precepts staff in the scrub role, and ensures adherence to patient safety protocols while maintaining professionalism and teamwork. They collaborate with surgeons, sterile processing, and vendors to manage equipment and supplies, optimize clinical operations, and actively participate in quality improvement, education, and mentorship within the specialty service line. The Level 2 position has greater responsibility in mentorship & coaching, optimizing operations, and influencing broader surgical service decisions.
What You Will Do
- Provides patient care and functions in the primary scrub position while providing guidance for the technical aspects of surgical procedures relates to the specialty service line.
- Responsible for precepting others in the scrub role while demonstrating a broad range of clinical skill, expertise and leadership qualities.
- Provides labeled medications with correct doses on the sterile field and adheres to patient safety expectations.
- Support the operative team, includes following patient care hand off protocol, OR standards, protocols and policies.
- Is involved in staff orientation process. Provides timely verbal/written feedback of learners' progress.
- Consistently displays a positive attitude, consistently role models and exhibits professionalism promoting teamwork within the patient care environment.
- Works collaboratively as a liaison between operating room, surgeons, sterile processing, vendors and other hospitals for equipment and supply access and inventory.
- Assures appropriate instruments and supplies are present and in proper working condition and demonstrates the ability to operate service specific equipment.
- Demonstrates clear communication and effective collaboration to optimize patient care, clinical operations and coaching of staff.
- Assesses daily surgery schedule and facilitates meeting patient needs with charge RN by contacting vendors and other hospitals for supplies needed for cases.
- Maintains surgeon specific procedure preferences and service tray lists.
- Actively participates in the quality improvement process.
Additional Responsibilities
- Involved in learning, self-improvement and serves as a knowledge expert and resource person and mentor for the service line and staff.
- Arranges coverage of responsibilities, provides hand-off report and delegates duties when not on service.
- Utilizes on-going data collection and follow-up information obtained during perioperative period to aid in research care studies that promote effectiveness and quality of patient care.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
