JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Department of Anthropology is seeking a motivated Master's-level Biotechnology student for a part-time Research Assistant position. This role will support DNA extraction workflows, contribute to basic bioinformatics tasks, and perform general laboratory duties. Training will be provided, making this an excellent opportunity to develop hands-on skills in molecular biology and computational analysis within a collaborative research environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform DNA extractions from a variety of biological samples following established laboratory protocols
  • Assist in preparing, labeling, and organizing samples for downstream analysis
  • Support basic bioinformatics tasks, including data organization, preliminary analysis, and use of standard software tools
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation of experimental procedures and results
  • Assist with general laboratory operations, including reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, and inventory management
  • Follow all laboratory safety procedures and guidelines
  • Collaborate with lab members to support ongoing research projects

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's program in Biotechnology or a closely related field
  • Basic understanding of molecular biology concepts (coursework sufficient; hands-on experience not required)
  • Interest in learning DNA extraction techniques and introductory bioinformatics methods
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Effective communication skills
