Senior Systems Administrator
Job description
This is a HYBRID role in Boston, MA. Candidates must be able to work on site.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Systems Administrator with strong expertise in enterprise storage, backup solutions, virtualization platforms, and Windows-based infrastructure. This role is responsible for designing, managing, optimizing, and supporting mission-critical IT systems in a highly available environment. This position requires both hands-on technical expertise and the ability to work across teams to support infrastructure planning, implementation, and operations. Occasional after-hours support is required for maintenance and incident response.
Key Responsibilities
Storage & Backup Administration
- Manage and maintain on-premises storage and data protection platforms, including enterprise storage arrays and modern backup solutions.
- Oversee daily backup operations and ensure successful completion of scheduled jobs.
- Perform routine test restores to validate data recoverability across multiple data types.
- Monitor system health, utilization, and performance; implement improvements as needed.
- Maintain current firmware and patch levels to ensure optimal system functionality.
- Optimize storage architecture to support virtualized environments.
- Track and validate replication processes to support business continuity and disaster recovery objectives.
- Develop and enforce standard operating procedures related to storage and backup management.
- Collaborate with database teams to ensure proper protection of critical systems.
- Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements.
- Lead and execute infrastructure-related projects, ensuring timely and budget-conscious delivery.
- Coordinate with vendors to evaluate products, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions.
Virtualization Management
- Administer and maintain multiple enterprise virtualization environments.
- Monitor system performance and implement enhancements to improve efficiency and availability.
- Maintain hypervisor and management platforms with current updates and patches.
- Design and optimize host clusters for performance, scalability, and resilience.
- Support hardware lifecycle activities including system expansion and refresh efforts.
- Develop strategies for resource allocation and capacity planning to prevent performance bottlenecks.
- Perform system upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.
- Implement security best practices to protect virtual infrastructure.
- Document standards and procedures related to virtualization environments.
Active Directory & Windows Infrastructure
- Support and maintain complex Active Directory environments across multiple domains.
- Monitor directory services health and performance, implementing improvements where needed.
- Assist with identity and access management including user, group, and policy administration.
- Support core services such as DNS and DHCP.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to ensure security and consistency across systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of relevant experience, or Master's degree with 7+ years of experience
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Enterprise storage platforms
- Backup and recovery technologies
- Virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware environments)
- Windows Server infrastructure and Active Directory
- Experience managing highly available, private cloud or virtualized environments
- Knowledge of enterprise server hardware platforms
- Experience designing and maintaining large-scale virtual infrastructure environments
- Scripting experience (e.g., PowerShell or similar tools) for automation and efficiency
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results within deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead technical initiatives
Preferred Certifications
- Industry certifications in storage, virtualization, backup technologies, or Microsoft platforms
- IT service management certifications (e.g., ITIL)
