Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Position Overview

This is a field-based position - not a lab or research facility role. As a Field Chemist, you will travel to customer sites, and other locations to sort, pack, and remove hazardous chemicals. You will also be responsible for transporting those hazardous materials to our location for disposal. Some office work will be required as well.

The Field Chemist training is a 6-month program. During this period, you will work side by side with an experienced Field Chemist to learn the role hands-on. You will also receive formal training in OSHA standards, RCRA, and DOT regulations, among others.

A Class B CDL will be required within 6 months of your hire date. Within your first few weeks, you will obtain your Class B CDL permit and complete CDL training on the job. Company vehicles you may operate include transit vans, sprinter vans, and box trucks.

Pay: Pay for this role starts at $22/hour, depending on experience.

Location & Schedule

  • Reports to the Field Office at the start of each day the hours are 7:30-4:30pm. Some jobs may require an early start Time due to customer demand and or for traveling to the customer site
  • Dispatched to project sites throughout the region during the day
  • Returns to the office at end of day to decontaminate equipment and complete documentation
  • Travel up to 50% of the time to regional project sites

A Day in the Life

No two days are the same - the work is physical, fast-paced, and mission-critical.

A typical day begins at the Field Office, where you'll load tools, PPE, and supplies before heading out to one or more customer sites. Daily tasks vary and may include:

  • Cleaning and removing underground chemical storage tanks and preparing waste for disposal
  • Demolition labor at contaminated building and land sites
  • Operating excavation and filter press equipment
  • Handling, loading, unloading, and sampling drums
  • Responding to emergency spill situations as needed
  • Using small hand tools and providing general construction support
  • At day's end: decontaminating equipment, completing paperwork, and prepping for the next assignment

Key Responsibilities

  • Prioritize health and safety at all times - adhering to all company policies, processes, and safe work practices
  • Assists in the segregation of chemicals by hazard class and packs compatible materials in appropriate containers and prepares for transportation; completes necessary paperwork for each job
  • Determines and loads supplies needed for job completion and travels to various industry, laboratory, and educational sites to perform lab pack services
  • Assists in characterizing materials at field project sites
  • Adheres to proper placarding and load segregation requirements when transporting hazardous materials
  • Develops good customer relations by effectively communicating with site points of contact and others at customer location / site
  • Appropriately directs Field Technicians / Drivers who are assisting with waste collection
  • Maintains an introductory knowledge of high-hazard materials management / assessment and cylinder handling


Education

- Associates degree (required); Bachelor's degree (preferred)


Experience

  • Valid driver's license preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work in variable outdoor conditions
  • Must be clean shaven at all times - this role requires the ability to properly wear a respirator due to potential exposure to hazardous atmospheres, waste, and materials
