POSITION TITLE: Interim Social Services Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Puyallup Valley Corps

STATUS: Temporary/Full Time/Non-Exempt

(tentative June 29, 2026 - October 5, 2026)

SUPERVISOR: Corps Officer

HOURS: 40 Hours Per Week

This is a temporary position starting in June 2026 and working approximately into October 2026, with the end date subject to change based on program needs.

DESCRIPTION:

Administer a variety of programs (Christmas, Social Services, and Volunteers) to meet the physical, social, and spiritual needs of our clients through direct client contact and the supervision of staff and volunteers.

DETAIL:

The Social Services Coordinator handles all inquiries for assistance through The Salvation Army Puyallup Valley Corps Food Bank. Oversees the disbursement of financial and material assistance given. Does basic problem solving casework and client referral. Creates all paperwork and maintains records of cases / clients. Works with other Social Service agencies to develop inter-agency relationships working within the guidelines of The Salvation Army. Responsible for ordering, disbursing and maintaining food inventories from other agencies, businesses and gift in kind.

REQUIREMENTS:



  • College degree preferred; high school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Social Work or related field
  • Show an ability to deal with physical, emotional, and spiritual needs (either through direct assistance or referral) of the client population.
  • Collaborative and interactive experience with Pierce County/Northwest Washington or similar Social Service agencies
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a diverse client population.
  • An understanding of and willingness to abide by The Salvation Army's mission, philosophy and practices
  • Ability to understand and comply with The Salvation Army policies in regards to disbursement of funding
  • Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to represent The Salvation Army throughout the community.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure
  • Availability to travel overnight
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to pass TSA MVR check and in-house driving test. Commercial driver's license preferred with passenger endorsement.
  • Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and guidelines, including the ability to pass a TSA background check
  • Basic computer knowledge: Excel, Word, Power Point and ability to navigate database applications and use new software programs with basic training.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Answer and/ or respond to all telephone calls & emails.
  • Interview, screen and make appointments for those seeking assistance.
  • Prepare client files and records, making copies of all necessary identification and information regarding client circumstances. Maintain current and accurate computer files and statistical data
  • Keep accurate record of funding received and disbursed, monitoring the financial status of all Social Service Programs.
  • Complete monthly reports to DHQ, Accounting, Advisory Board, community groups, funding partners, and any other stakeholder needing a report.
  • Order and maintain food supplies, plan and implement the preparation of food distribution.
  • Coordinate grocery rescue pickups from assigned stores including completing the pickups when necessary.
  • Coordinate the Seasonal Assistance Program and assist with other seasonal programs, community programs, projects and office tasks when necessary or requested by the Commanding Officer or Administrative Assistant.
  • Responsible for the proper recording, disbursing and reporting of in-kind donations.
  • Supervise volunteers used for food distribution and assistance programs.
  • Recruit, train, place, and recognize volunteers for all programs: administration, social services, food bank, and seasonal.
  • All other duties as assigned.



CASE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Provide professional case management for clients with more serious long-term needs such as housing assistance, utility assistance, and food bank certification.
  • Provide professional referral services for needs that The Salvation Army cannot meet directly.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Ability to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls;
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs. (usually file boxes) repetitively and occasionally an item up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to travel
