School of the Wild Bus Driver

BASIC FUNCTION

To assist with the operations of the School of the Wild program for the University of Iowa's UI WILD. Safely transport students and staff from community elementary schools to Macbride Nature Recreation Area (MNRA) and back on the school bus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Safely transport students, educators, staff, and volunteers from school to MNRA (a.m. shift).
• Safely transport students, educators, staff, and volunteers from MNRA to the designated school (p.m. shift).
• Arrive at MNRA on time for each shift.
• Complete daily safety inspection of the bus before leaving MNRA every shift.
• Sweep the bus immediately after students and staff have exited for any child/staff belongings.
• Clean up and lock up the bus at the end of every shift.
• Maintain a positive attitude at all times.
• Show flexibility and understanding when interacting with children and staff.
• Communicate clearly and timely with supervisors and team members.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED.
• Attendance at School of the Wild training session before the season begins (late August).
• Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) requirement for holding a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must have air brakes and passenger endorsements.
• Completion and approval to drive University of Iowa vehicles.

WORK HOURS

Option 1

• Morning Shift - Monday-Friday, 7:30 am to 9:30 am
• Fall Season: mid/late August - mid November, 2026
• Spring season: mid/late March - end of May, 2027

Option 2

• Afternoon Shift - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm and Thursday, 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
• Fall Season: mid/late August - mid November, 2026
• Spring season: mid/late March - end of May, 2027

Option 3

• Morning and afternoon shifts
• Complete hours for Option 1 and Option 2
• Fall Season: mid/late August - mid November, 2026
• Spring season: mid/late March - end of May, 2027

LOCATION

Macbride Nature Recreation Area - 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd NE, Solon, IA

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

• Criminal background check upon hire.
• CPR/AED/First Aid Certified or willing to obtain.
• Minors on Campus Training to be completed upon hire.

Pay

• $18 - $22 depending upon experience.
