Position Summary

The Primary Care Medical Director (Nurse Practitioner) provides clinical and operational leadership for Boynton Health's Primary Care services (https://boynton.umn.edu/) while maintaining an active advanced practice clinical role. Reporting to the Executive Medical Director, this position is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of clinical operations, provider practice, quality initiatives, and patient care delivery within Primary Care.

The Director independently manages provider performance, clinical workflows, patient access, and operational issues while ensuring compliance with organizational policies, accreditation standards, and evidence-based practice. Working in partnership with the Executive Medical Director and other Medical Directors, this position implements strategic initiatives, supports quality improvement efforts, and provides leadership that promotes safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

Consistent with the HC Pro 5 classification, this position exercises independent judgment in managing daily clinical operations, supervising providers, resolving operational issues, and implementing organizational priorities established by executive leadership. The scope of responsibility is focused on the effective operation and continuous improvement of Primary Care services.

Overview of Job Responsibilities

Clinical Practice (80%)

Maintain an active clinical practice providing comprehensive primary care services consistent with Minnesota Nurse Practitioner licensure, credentialed privileges, and Boynton Health standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage acute illnesses, chronic diseases, and preventive healthcare needs.
  • Perform comprehensive health assessments, physical examinations, and preventive health screenings.
  • Order, perform, and interpret appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within approved clinical privileges.
  • Prescribe medications, therapies, and medical devices consistent with scope of practice and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans and coordinate care with specialists and other healthcare providers.
  • Provide patient education focused on disease prevention, health promotion, treatment options, and self-management.
  • Perform office-based procedures consistent with credentialed clinical privileges.
  • Respond to urgent and same-day patient care needs, including assigned coverage within Urgent Care and Gopher Quick Clinic.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary consultation to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care.

Clinical Leadership & Operations (5%)

  • Direct the daily clinical operations of Primary Care to ensure safe, timely, high-quality patient care.
  • Implement departmental priorities, operational initiatives, and clinical practice standards established by executive leadership.
  • Exercise independent judgment in resolving day-to-day provider, staffing, scheduling, and patient care operational issues.
  • Monitor provider productivity, patient access, quality measures, and operational performance and implement corrective actions as appropriate.
  • Recommend workflow improvements, policy revisions, staffing adjustments, and operational enhancements.
  • Collaborate with operational leaders to ensure efficient coordination of nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, behavioral health, and support services.
  • Participate in budget planning and resource discussions by providing operational recommendations and monitoring resource utilization.
  • Implement organizational initiatives related to quality improvement, accreditation, patient safety, and operational excellence.

Provider Leadership & Staff Development (5%)

  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, mentoring, and performance management for primary care physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Promote provider engagement, accountability, professional development, continuing education, and evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Participate in provider recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, orientation, retention, and succession planning.
  • Lead provider peer review, quality improvement activities, and professional practice evaluations.
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive work environment that supports teamwork, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nursing staff, and learners.

Quality, Compliance & Accreditation (5%)

  • Lead and participate in quality assurance, peer review, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support Boynton Health's accreditation activities, credentialing processes, and regulatory readiness.
  • Monitor compliance with clinical documentation standards, infection prevention practices, HIPAA, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Promote evidence-based practice, patient safety, risk reduction, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Participate in continuing education and maintain professional competency, licensure, certification, and credentialing requirements.

Organizational Leadership (5%)

  • Participate on Boynton Health leadership committees and interdisciplinary workgroups.
  • Provide clinical expertise to support organizational planning and operational decision making.
  • Recommend opportunities for service improvement and operational efficiency.
  • Promote collaboration, accountability, equity, and continuous improvement throughout Primary Care.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree plus at least six years of relevant experience or advanced degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program plus at least four years of experience or a terminal degree plus at least one years of experience.
  • Current licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Minnesota.
  • Current national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner recognized by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
  • DEA registration and prescriptive authority.
  • Minimum four (4) years of progressively responsible clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Demonstrated experience leading clinical quality improvement, provider practice initiatives, or operational improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach, and develop healthcare professionals.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive patient care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner (DNP).
  • Two or more years of leadership or supervisory experience in an ambulatory healthcare setting.
  • Experience serving as a Medical Director, Lead Provider, Clinical Lead, or similar leadership role.
  • Experience supervising physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Experience in college health, integrated primary care, academic medicine, or urgent care.
  • Experience with AAAHC accreditation, quality improvement, provider peer review, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience managing provider schedules, productivity, access initiatives, and clinical operations.
  • Experience using Epic or other electronic health record systems.

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of an advanced practice provider in an outpatient clinical environment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform physical examinations, office-based procedures, and operate medical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move supplies or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an ambulatory healthcare setting and includes direct patient care, clinical leadership, and administrative responsibilities. The position requires frequent interaction with patients, healthcare providers, staff, students, and University partners. Responsibilities include both scheduled and urgent patient care, participation in leadership activities, and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. The incumbent must maintain compliance with all applicable safety, infection prevention, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: Annual compensation is negotiable and based on education, qualifications and experience. A candidate can reasonably anticipate $160k+
