Primary Purpose of Department
The primary purpose of academic advising at the university is to provide students with the support needed to successfully navigate their academic experience from first enrollment to graduation.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position is committed to engaging students in personal development and self-assessment, empowering them to effectively manage their academic success, and supporting them through the exploration of their major and career development plans. This individual ensures that students have access to accurate, relevant information to take initiative and responsibility for their own success. This individual upholds the expectations and standards of advising at Charlotte professionally and respectfully, which reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Learn and remain current on all relevant curricula for the discipline and, more broadly, the students' degree program.
  • Assist students in developing plans for making progress towards these goals while attending UNC Charlotte and evaluating and charting their own progress toward those goals.
  • Understand and effectively develop students' knowledge of university academic policies, regulations, guidelines, and deadlines, and the curriculum requirements for the specific program(s)of study of the students being advised.
  • Use advising technologies effectively to give accurate, timely information.
  • Proactively engage students to ensure degree program persistence and timely graduation.
  • Create an advising framework and provide advising for newly created online programs in the caseload.


Specific functional areas include:

  • Liaison between the department, other college/university advisors, and students.
  • Orientation and outreach.
  • Targeted advising.
  • Partner closely with the Chair/Director, Associate Chair/Director, and program Directors to ensure academic advising strategically meets departmental/school needs while actively communicating emerging student trends and issues to leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Candidate must have completed a Master's degree in a related field.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Two years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting after obtaining the degree.
  • A working knowledge of Banner, DegreeWorks, and/or EAB/navigate or Salesforce is a plus.
  • Candidate must be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multitasking, and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff, and faculty.
  • A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements.
