Employment Duration: 6 months
Under the direct supervision of the Orthopaedic Institute Practice Supervisor and Manager, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the clinical staff and physician leadership, the Hospital Assistant II assists in the delivery of care to patients in an ambulatory multi-specialty group practice. Work includes a variety of personal care and nursing procedures, including assuring positive care outcomes. The incumbent performs assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the primary and specialty care services provided to patients within the practice. Adherence to the Medical Center Telephone and House Standards is required. Exemplary customer service is essential. Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine clinical functions and document in the patient chart, including:
- Vital signs
- Height and weight
- Pain screening
- Chief complaints
- Current medications
- Assist patients in preparation for examinations and procedures.
- Room patients and prepare examination rooms, including accessing electronic medical records and imaging studies.
- Perform medication reconciliation in preparation for the provider.
- Apply and remove casts.
- Transport patients as directed.
- Monitor patient flow throughout the clinic, including updating the tracking board and Expeditor light system.
- Obtain specimens and perform simple laboratory procedures as directed.
- Complete clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ensure x-ray films are available for patient visits.
- Instruct patients in the use of crutches, canes, and walkers.
- Document patient care activities, results, and patient-related communications in the medical record.
- Monitor medication supplies for expiration and remove expired items.
- Comply with Medical Center and Ambulatory Services policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and clinical practice.
- Complete annual competency testing.
- Demonstrate courteous and professional telephone communication consistent with Medical Center standards.
- Maintain a professional and helpful work environment by upholding House Standards.
- Share pertinent information and observations with members of the healthcare team.
- Identify and communicate problems to nursing staff or the appropriate supervisor.
- Offer suggestions for clinic or practice improvements.
- Work collaboratively as a member of the healthcare team.
- Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked examination rooms.
- Order and maintain clinical supplies as directed.
- Follow infection control procedures and equipment cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization policies.
- Complete refrigerator logs according to Medical Center policy.
- Ensure medication cabinets, needles, and syringes remain secured.
- Complete AED daily checks where applicable.
- Follow department and Medical Center policies, procedures, and work rules.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding patients and staff.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and functional work environment.
- Prioritize work appropriately and use the appropriate chain of command.
- Assist with orientation and training of new staff.
- Cross-train to front desk registration and call center functions.
- Float to various specialty pods as designated.
- Prepare disability forms.
- Assist with retrieving phone messages.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- High School Diploma or GED certificate.
- Prior experience in a medical office environment.
- Certified Medical Assistant or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) card from the American Heart Association.
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assisting program.
- Phlebotomy certification.
- Three months of experience.
