Position Summary
Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care.
  • Conduct original research, publications, and related activities in the area of sickle cell disease.
  • Perform RN duties.
  • Completes required learning modules
  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing staff and students.
  • Receives and provides feedback to members of the health care team regarding performance/practice.
  • Clinical
  • Perform interventions as prescribed by the provider by verifying and implementing orders from physician and/or advance practice nurse.
  • Promotes and supports Shared Leadership as the selected method of nursing governance.
  • Demonstrates in-depth clinical knowledge, skills and expertise.
  • Serve as a Healthcare Operations 'consultant'; Translating operational information between nursing at all levels and systems engineers, analysts or designers using a variety of techniques focused on improving outcomes.
  • + Assist with special projects and perform other related tasks as needed
  • Adheres to Nursing's time, overtime, and attendance policies
  • Develops, implements and updates the patient's plan of care on on-going assessment of the patient and input from the patient's family..
  • Follow up and inform the physicians of abnormal lab results.
  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
  • demonstrates nursing procedures and techniques to assure staff's ability to render_x000d_ effective care._x000d_
  • Provides clinical guidance during the staffing process and assists in long range planning for resource distribution prioritization.
  • Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution.
  • Assures safety and security of patients, significant others and staff.
  • Complies with University Health Services TB, flu compliance, and fit testing requirements.
  • standardizing human resource processes, fiscal responsibility in nursing, and implement solutions for efficiency and improved employee / patient satisfaction in nursing.
  • Teach patients and the families regarding treatment expectations.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    1. Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation. Out of state and compact licenses are not accepted.
    2. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
    3. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
    4. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
    5. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
