Senior Accountant

SUMMARY

Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to own the lease accounting and reporting activities, alongside prepaids and non-construction fixed assets for M.A. Mortenson Company and related entities. This role requires strong technical expertise in real estate lease accounting and ASC 842 reporting and serves as a key partner across the business (Finance, Legal, Risk, and Project Operations) and with external property managers. Bringing a disciplined, controls-minded approach, the Senior Accountant ensures financial information and activities are accounted for in compliance with applicable internal policies and technical accounting guidance and safeguards the accuracy of that information through analytical review procedures, internal controls, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the accounting and administration of the company's real estate lease portfolio, including timely and accurate processing of monthly lease payments, CAM and other landlord charges, and related journal entries.

  • Administer the lease accounting software, including abstracting new leases, recording monthly lease activity, and processing amendments, renewals, expansions, and terminations to ensure a complete and accurate lease population.

  • Reconcile lease balances to the general ledger and to FASB / ASC 842 reporting, including right-of-use assets, lease liabilities, expense classification, and disclosure support for internal and external reporting.

  • Own the accounting and reconciliation for prepaid assets and non-construction fixed assets, including additions, amortization and depreciation, and disposals, along with supporting analysis.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Lease Accounting inbox and lease community, researching and resolving lease activity and questions in a timely, professional manner, escalating as needed, while building strong partnerships across the business (Finance, Legal, Risk, and Project Operations) and with external property managers.

  • Complete month-end and quarter-end close activities for assigned areas (Leases, Prepaids, Non-Construction Fixed Assets, and Key Reserves and Accruals), including journal entries, account reconciliations, and analytical review of account activity.

  • Maintain internal controls, formal procedures, and appropriate segregation of duties, ensuring alignment with internal policies and technical accounting guidance, driving continuous improvements to accounting processes.
  • Work with external auditors on interim and year-end audit activities, including preparation of workpapers and supporting analysis.
  • Perform ad hoc analysis and participate in special projects, as identified.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5+ years of relevant public or equivalent industry accounting experience, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and external audit processes
  • Demonstrated experience applying ASC 842 lease accounting required, including real estate leases
  • CPA designation strongly preferred
  • Experience in general ledger and leasing software; Oracle Cloud Financials / Projects, AMT/Pro Lease Direct preferred
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills
  • Thorough knowledge of technical accounting principles / US GAAP, accounting processes / best practices, and internal controls
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the initiative to seek innovative solutions and drive efficient change.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build partnerships and interact effectively with all levels of the organization and external parties
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently deliver accurate, complete work in a timely fashion.

The base pay range for this job is $85,300 - $128,000. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%).

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
