The Power Unit Specialist is responsible for building, testing, diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on power units and compactors. This position performs mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fabrication work while working with limited supervision and following established procedures, technical specifications, and safety requirements. The Power Unit Specialist also assists with field installations and repairs and is responsible for completing work accurately, efficiently, and within established Standard Repair Times.

Responsibilities of Position:



  • Inspect, build, test, and brand power units for installation in accordance with RFQs, specifications, and established procedures
  • Assist with the installation, service, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of power units and compactors in the field
  • Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair compactors and related equipment
  • Perform safety and operational inspections of compactors to ensure compliance with Rumpke standards, OSHA requirements, ANSI standards, and applicable electrical codes
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment issues and determine the appropriate repair or corrective action
  • Read and interpret hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and equipment schematics to properly diagnose and repair equipment
  • Estimate labor time, materials, and parts required for repairs and new tasks
  • Complete assigned work within established Standard Repair Times (SRT)
  • Accurately utilize SAP to record labor hours, parts, and other job-related information for billing and tracking purposes
  • Assist with machine builds, modifications, and other equipment-related projects
  • Perform fabrication and welding activities using appropriate shop equipment, hand tools, and power tools
  • Follow written instructions, established procedures, and technical specifications while working independently with limited supervision
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout requirements, when performing maintenance and repairs
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Communicate equipment conditions, repair recommendations, and completed work effectively to coworkers, supervisors, and customers
  • Assist other team members with equipment repairs, builds, installations, and related projects as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Supervisory Responsibility:



  • This position will not manage employees



Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:



  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers
  • Mechanical aptitude with demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to identify root causes of equipment failures and determine appropriate corrective action
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and shop equipment
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple repair and build assignments
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision
  • Familiarity with the use of computers, repair manuals, mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical schematics to troubleshoot or repair units
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with internal/external customers



Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:



  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in industrial equipment, hydraulics, electrical systems, mechanical repair, heavy equipment, compactors, or a related field required
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems and electrical systems, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues
  • Experience with fabrication and welding
  • Experience with LOTO procedures



Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:



  • Frequently lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 35 lbs
  • Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
  • Frequently working inside
  • Occasionally working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Frequently stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Occasionally climbing and/or balancing
  • Occasionally sitting; frequently standing/walking



Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:



  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
