NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Consumer Loan Underwriting, this position leads the consumer loan underwriting team and is accountable for underwriting quality, operational performance, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The Consumer Loan Underwriting Manager develops team capabilities through coaching and leadership while fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and member service excellence. The role ensures consistent application of underwriting standards, sound credit decisioning, and alignment with organizational goals and risk tolerance.


REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience underwriting consumer loans with at least 2 years managing underwriters. Equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
2. Experience in a centralized loan underwriting structure in a financial institution.
3. Demonstrated success in leading a team to achieve business results and goals.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of lending/compliance regulations, underwriting guidelines and credit qualifications.
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, problem solving skills, organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
6. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in various situations while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
7. Must have a flexible schedule, with the ability to work some evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
8. Must develop a thorough understanding of company policies and procedures as they relate to the position. Must comply with all company policies and procedures and job-related state and federal laws and regulations.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Leads and develops the consumer loan underwriting team through effective hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and talent development.
2. Provides ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and development support through regular one-on-one meetings, team discussions, and performance evaluations, ensuring timely documentation and follow-through.
3. Collaborates with the Sr. Manager, Consumer Loan Underwriting to drive strategic objectives and continuous improvement initiatives across underwriting quality, service, operations, processes, and technology.
4. Makes credit decisions by evaluating borrower creditworthiness, collateral, debt-to-income ratios, loan-to-value ratios, and other relevant risk factors.
5. Evaluates and structures loan requests, determining appropriate loan terms and documentation requirements for approved loans.
6. Assesses financial risk by analyzing borrower and collateral factors in compliance with underwriting guidelines and lending policies.
7. Approves loans and loan modifications within delegated lending authority and established underwriting guidelines.
8. Provides oversight of underwriting quality and loan documentation standards to ensure sound lending decisions and compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
9. Ensures the quality and integrity of underwriting decisions by overseeing file reviews, documentation standards, and escalation of identified issues.
10. Fosters strong partnerships with Branches and Member Service teams to support exceptional service delivery, collaboration, and continuous process improvement.
11. Promotes a member-focused culture by supporting cross-functional referrals and identifying opportunities to deepen member relationships and deliver comprehensive financial solutions.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
