What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Packaging Engineer to join our Service Packaging team. You will develop and implement packaging solutions for Tesla service parts - expendable and returnable - across vehicle and energy service programs. This role will be focused on sustaining density, costm and quality improvements, and helping to ensure sage, efficient material flow from suppliers and factories through distribution centers to service centers. This is a hands-on role spanning design, validation, supplier execution, warehouse and distribution support, and cross-functional launch readiness. You will work collaboratively with Service, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Logistics, and Warehouse Operations. We are looking for someone with manufacturing packaging experience (automotive preferred), strong skills in both expendable and returnable packaging - including wooden crates, corrugated boxes, racks, returnable totes, and closed-loop distribution flows - and a track record of driving cost savings. You will spend time on-site at suppliers, factories, and warehouses as needed to validate designs and improve real-world packaging performance. The successful candidate works quickly and precisely, communicates clearly, thrives with multiple priorities, and elevates the team by sharing practical packaging knowledge.
What You'll Do
- Lead end-to-end packaging projects for service parts from requirements and concept through design, validation, and production implementation
- Partner with Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Logistics, Warehouse Operations, and Service teams to gather requirements and deliver packaging that meets quality, cost, and timeline goals for sustaining service projects
- Support warehousing and distribution packaging initiatives across distribution centers and 3PL nodes, including storage fit, unit-load integrity, handling, quality and inbound/outbound damage reduction
- Apply CAD and technical drawings as required, including datum structure, GD&T, and tolerance considerations where designs demand it
- Create and maintain packaging specifications, documentation, and related data needed for implementation, warehouse compliance, and ongoing operations
- Improve packaging density and reduce logistics cost for high-volume and sensitive service parts while protecting quality; monitor packaging performance metrics, report findings, and recommend improvements to standards and processes
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Packaging Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Industrial Design Engineering, or equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
- Demonstrated experience with both expendable and returnable packaging, with track record of driving packaging-related cost savings (density, freight, damage, material, or labor)
- Strong knowledge of packaging materials and processes (corrugate, foam, plastics, wood/crates, steel/aluminum, injection-molded dunnage, and related materials)
- Familiarity with packaging testing and validation methods and industry standards such as ISTA and ASTM
- Ability to manage multiple priorities without sacrificing quality of results; strong project management, risk management, and communication skills
- Collaborative team player with a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to teach and influence cross-functional partners
- Willingness to travel up to 40-50% as required for the role
