Job Summary:

The Accounting Methods group helps companies optimize their federal tax accounting methods, including revenue and expense recognition, capitalization, depreciation, and amortization, and various other special methods of accounting. Accounting Methods is part of BDO's Specialized Tax Services business, which is composed of various tax consulting practices designed to help companies comply with specific areas of federal, state, and international tax law.

As a Tax Experienced Senior, Accounting Methods, you will help achieve BDO's core purpose-Helping People Thrive Every Day-by helping both public and private companies identify federal tax benefits and correct federal tax exposures. Our clients are leaders in industries such as technology, manufacturing, healthcare, architecture/engineering services, and consumer products. As a Tax Experienced Senior, Accounting Methods, you will have the opportunity and charge to innovate and collaborate with fellow BDO colleagues in all our business lines, as well as with our clients' leaders in tax, accounting, and finance, and in their operations, software, manufacturing, and supply chain departments.

Tax Experienced Seniors, Accounting Methods pursue opportunities to enable them to gain and improve their skills in every aspect of professional service, including technical, interpersonal, verbal and written communication, project management, practice management, and business development. The role also may assist with business development and operational matters.

Job Duties:

Tax Consulting:

  • Develops long-term, mutually beneficial client relationships
  • Supports the Accounting Methods team and practice in development and retention of long-term client relationships by providing high quality work product
  • Collaborates with other Accounting Methods Experienced Senior Associate professionals to prepare and review accounting method changes, including section 481(a) computations
  • Identifies when research is needed; clearly and concisely frames issues to be researched; and clearly and concisely reports the analysis
  • Provides premier-quality services to our clients leveraging and/or improving our standard business practices and technologies
  • Completes tasks efficiently and effectively, organizing workpapers so that required revisions are minimal
  • Takes initiative to ensure that due dates are met
  • Participates in researching potential new clients, their tax position, facts that might trigger issues or opportunities for them, etc.
  • Operates online research tools efficiently to gather pertinent tax, legal, industry, and other information
  • Continues building tax knowledge by monitoring relevant tax laws and educating oneself on tax strategies
  • Manages projects by planning the project process and the procedures to be performed with quality
  • Meets internal deadlines to match core tax team and client expectations for timely delivery of service
  • Maintains high level of technical skills in accounting methods area of the tax law through staying current on recent guidance
  • Assists with the development of tools/templates that would be helpful to core tax services (CTS) and Tax professionals to implement accounting method projects
  • Complies with industry standards and the policies outlined in the BDO Tax Quality Manual
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Trains and mentors Accounting Methods Interns, Associates, and possibly other Senior Associates
  • Ensures Accounting Methods Associates and Interns are trained on all relevant tax software
  • Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for Accounting Methods Associates and Interns
  • Acts as mentor to BIG Associates and Interns

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in Accounting, Finance, or Economics, required

Experience:

  • Two (2) or more years prior experience in accounting, tax, or finance (including internships), required
  • Prior experience in tax consulting roles (e.g., accounting methods, 263A, FDII), preferred
  • Experience in preparing/reviewing tax provisions, corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships, preferred
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis preferred

License/Certifications:

  • Currently holds or working towards Certified Public Accountant license, Enrolled Agent certification, or Juris Doctorate degree (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required

Software:

  • Advanced proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Excel & Word, preferred

Language:

  • N/A

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

National Range: $74,550 - $147,000
Maryland Range: $74,550 - $147,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $74,550 - $147,000
Washington DC Range: $74,550 - $147,000
