Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Grounds Supervisor the Groundskeeper will performs a full range of grounds maintenance & gardening duties. This includes but not limited to assists in various related landscaping projects, maintains campus grounds, athletic fields and other special venues according to the user's request or published specifications.

Essential Functions

40% - Mows lawns, trims, prunes trees, fertilizes, maintains irrigation systems, waters, sweeps walkways and building entry ways

20% - Maintains athletic fields, sets up facilities for special events including layout and lining athletic fields

15% - Digs trenches, cultivates, plants and transplants, spreads mulch, rakes leaves/debris

15% - Operate various grounds equipment, such as tractors, mowers, edgers, trimmers, spreaders, aerators, top dressers, etc.

10% - Other Duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of formal or informal education or experience which assures the ability to read, write, and speak at a level sufficient for the successful completion of the job duties as described.

Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving: http://www.maricopa.edu/legal/rmi/vehicle.htm#requirements

Desired Qualifications

A. Prior experience working grounds maintenance in a large property (20 acres or more) institution or higher education campus

B. Prior experience assisting with irrigation or Sprinkler systems repairs

C. Prior experience preparing athletic fields and other special event venues. This includes but is not limited to athletic field preparation/maintenance for college level competition according to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)

D. One year of full-time relevant MCCCD experience during the previous two years

Special Working Conditions
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds 

  • Work is primarily performed in outdoor environments

  • Work may include moderate exposure to hazardous materials 

  • Work involves the frequent use of machinery, equipment, and tools commonly used in the maintenance of outdoor areas

  • May require the use and climbing of ladders. 

  • Some work may be performed in an office setting and require the use of a computer 

  • May require standing or walking while performing duties, for the majority, if not all, of a work shift. 

  • May be exposed to loud noises, including construction or traffic noise, for short or long durations. 

  • Schedules seasonally can consist of shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, or otherwise non-standard work schedules.
