Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Mobile Robot

The Material Flow Engineering team is seeking a motivated and accomplished mechanical engineer who will lead the design and implementation of automated guided vehicles and associated equipment for new and existing factories and programs at Tesla. This position will be based in Gigafactory Texas near Austin, TX. The ideal candidate will excel in a demanding and fast-paced environment where they will work as part of a strong, agile, and highly motivated team to accomplish some of the most ambitious projects being attempted in any industry today. Tesla's Material Flow Engineering team designs and integrates autonomous mobile robotic vehicles for a wide variety of applications such as conveyance, warehousing, and assembly within Tesla production factories.

The Mechanical engineer will own the mobile robot product. In this role, you will function as the lead engineer responsible for application requirements, design, development and fabrication of mobile robot products. The role entails significant leadership in product and manufacturing design. Therolewill involve extensive collaboration with other teams and engineering disciplines. The role is located at Gigafactory Texas and requires travel to other Tesla sites globally. The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing manufacturing equipment through hands-on involvement, solving challenges with creative first principles solutions and bias for action to execute when non-trivial obstacles block project progress.

• Design automated material handling solutions to establish new and improved material flows throughout the facilities using automated vehicles

• Develop analytical models to establish design criteria and overall system performance criteria

• Maintain standard library of equipment, including CAD drawings and specifications

• Proficiency in designing parts and assemblies using 3D modeling software (SolidWorks Preferred)

• Own the development, detailed engineering design, and system build of mobile robot

• Debug and implement corrective actions for breakdowns and chronic equipment failure

• 5 years+ of experience in material handling automation: AS/RS, electric monorail system, conveyance, mobile robotics (AGVs or AMRs), and robotic material handling

• High mechanical aptitude with a passion to work on mechanical automation equipment, robots, design of electromechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic systems, motion controls and navigation & vision systems

• Must understand the integration of equipment intonew and existing production systems

• Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy

• Proficient in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA or similar 3D modeling software
