Emissions and OBD Engine Calibration Verification Senior Engineer

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group. The Electrified Propulsion Test & Verification (ePTV) team is one of the groups in the Electrified Propulsion Development division of HATCI responsible for delivering propulsion system performance, emissions compliance, onboard diagnostics, quality, validation, and technical support for Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia vehicles.

HATCI is seeking a highly motivated and technically accomplished Emissions and OBD Engine Calibration Verification Senior Engineer responsible for verification, validation, and technical assessment of engine emissions and on-board diagnostic calibrations. The role operates adjacent to calibration development and serves as the independent verification organization supporting certification readiness.

This organization is responsible for ensuring emissions and OBD calibrations satisfy internal quality targets, regulatory requirements, and certification readiness criteria prior to certification testing and vehicle release to commerce. The team will perform comprehensive verification testing, identify and resolve technical issues, and provide objective readiness assessments for calibration releases.

This role requires a strong technical foundation in powertrain controls, emissions, OBD, and vehicle calibration, combined with demonstrated capability and a passion for data-driven engineering. This position reports to the Senior Manager of ePTV.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Responsible for engine emissions and OBD calibration verification and validation activities.
  • Develop calibration solutions for any discovered issues.
  • Establish and execute verification strategies ensuring calibration readiness prior to certification testing and vehicle launch.
  • Perform emissions, OBD, drivability, diagnostic, and regulatory compliance verification testing.
  • Support EPA, CARB, and global regulatory compliance pre-certification verification activities.
  • Execute OBD monitor validation, diagnostic robustness evaluations, and readiness assessments.
  • Lead technical investigations of emissions and OBD issues identified during verification testing.
  • Coordinate cross-functional root cause investigations with calibration development, controls, software, certification, and durability teams.
  • Drive implementation and validation of corrective actions required to achieve certification readiness.
  • Suggest verification methodologies, test procedures, performance metrics, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Mentor and develop less experienced engineers in emissions controls, diagnostics, engine calibration, and regulatory compliance.
  • Identify systemic weaknesses in calibration development, controls strategies, verification plans, and validation processes, and drive implementation of preventive countermeasures.
  • Leverage development, durability, and environmental test data, including summer, winter, altitude, and other off-nominal operation testing, to improve issue detection, calibration robustness, and verification effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with calibration development, controls, certification, durability, software, and validation teams to ensure lessons learned from discovered issues are incorporated into future vehicle programs.
  • Provide concise technical assessments, issue status reporting, risk evaluations, and recommendations for corrective and preventive actions.
  • Document and suggest calibration and control strategies which reduce deterioration of emissions control hardware and improve statistical separation between failed and acceptable components.
  • Manage engineering resources, budgets, fleet assets, test infrastructure, development plans, and program deliverables across multiple vehicle programs.
  • Travel domestically and internationally up to 15%
