Job Description

SUMMARY

The Center to Advance Community Health & Equity (CACHE) is housed at the Public Health Institute (PHI) and has expertise to help nonprofit hospitals, health systems, and other stakeholders translate data into better community investments. CACHE helps users interpret data from Community Benefit Insight, and couple it with existing tools and resources for strategic community benefit implementation.

Position Summary

The Community-based Oral Health Workforce Development Specialist provides dental hygiene subject matter expertise to strengthen community-based oral health practice and workforce capacity. The position contributes to continuing dental education, workforce learning, practice-based training, technical assistance, and implementation activities that expand the ability of allied oral health professionals to deliver accessible, prevention-focused, and community-responsive care. The position translates dental hygiene expertise and community-based practice experience into practical education, workforce development strategies, tools, and technical assistance. The Community-based Oral Health Workforce Development Specialist reports to the Division Director IV.

This may be a regular, full- or part-time position. The starting FTE will be determined upon hire, depending on funding availability. This is a remote position that requires travel within and possibly outside of California based on project needs.

The full salary range for this position: $102,876 to $154,966 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $102,876 (minimum) to $128,921 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined using a variety of factors, such as the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as internal equity considerations and budget availability.

This position is contingent upon funding being awarded to PHI.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Community-based Oral Health Practice

  • Provide dental hygiene expertise to community-based oral health initiatives and practice transformation activities.
  • Identify and promote effective community-based approaches to prevention, oral health education, care coordination, and service delivery.
  • Support adaptation of evidence-informed practices to community, safety-net, public health, and other nontraditional settings.
  • Serve as a dental hygiene subject matter expert for education and training projects, and technical assistance activities.

Workforce Development & Learning

  • Develop and review dental hygiene and allied oral health content for continuing education, webinars, workshops, and other professional learning activities.
  • Contribute to workforce development strategies that strengthen the skills, confidence, and practice capacity of allied oral health professionals.
  • Support development of competency-based learning, practice tools, and workforce resources.
  • Identify emerging workforce needs and opportunities to strengthen community-based oral health delivery.

Technical Assistance & Practice Implementation

  • Provide technical assistance to dental hygienists, allied oral health professionals, community organizations, and oral health programs.
  • Support organizations in implementing community-based oral health practices and workforce strategies.
  • Facilitate peer learning and sharing of effective community-based practices.
  • Translate evidence and field experience into practical workforce resources, educational content, and implementation guidance.
  • Contribute to evaluation and continuous improvement of workforce learning activities.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with dentists, dental hygienists, allied oral health professionals, educators, implementation specialists, researchers, and community partners.
  • Support interdisciplinary approaches to oral health workforce development and practice transformation.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8 years of experience in dental hygiene, community-based oral health, public health, or a related practice setting. Master's degree in a relevant field may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree, or substitute with four additional years of relevant experience.

  • Current California Registered Dental Hygienist and Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice License.

Other Qualifications

  • Experience contributing to education, workforce development, practice improvement, or technical assistance.
  • Experience developing or reviewing educational content, curricula, or competency-based learning materials for adult professional learners.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and collaborative skills.
  • Experience working in or supporting community-based, public health, safety-net, or non-traditional oral health settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities and to apply culturally responsive, equity-focused approaches to oral health education and service delivery.
  • Experience with workforce development initiatives and working with interdisciplinary or allied oral health teams.
  • Familiarity with program evaluation and continuous quality improvement methods used to assess learning and workforce activities.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and manage multiple project deliverables and deadlines.
  • Master's degree in dental hygiene from an accredited program preferred.
