HJF is seeking a Systems Engineer II, under the direction of the Senior Manager, IT Systems Engineering, designs, implements, secures, operates, and maintains enterprise infrastructure supporting research, administrative, and regulated computing environments. The position supports virtualization, compute, storage, backup and recovery, Linux and Windows systems, and hybrid cloud infrastructure. The Systems Engineer participates in infrastructure modernization, lifecycle management, troubleshooting, recovery, security, and compliance activities while maintaining the documentation and operational evidence required to support reliable and secure IT services.

This position will be in support of the Office of the Chief Information Officer.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike.   • Enterprise Infrastructure Engineering and Operations: Implement, administer, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot enterprise compute, virtualization, storage, backup and recovery, server, and supporting infrastructure platforms. Support infrastructure throughout its lifecycle, including implementation, expansion, refresh, migration, troubleshooting, recovery, and retirement. Monitor infrastructure health, availability, capacity, performance, and resiliency.
  • Systems Engineering and Technical Implementation: Participate in the design and implementation of new or materially changed infrastructure and services. Document technical requirements, dependencies, configurations, implementation plans, testing requirements, and operational support needs. Work with technical leads and subject matter experts on architecture, integration, and infrastructure solutions spanning on-premises, cloud, and regulated environments. Follow established Systems Engineering lifecycle practices for approved design, implementation, validation, deployment, and operational handoff.
  • Security, Compliance, and Configuration Management: Implement and maintain systems according to approved security baselines, architecture standards, configuration requirements, and organizational security policies. Support CUI/CMMC and other regulated computing environments through secure configuration, vulnerability remediation, patching, logging, monitoring, access controls, backup, and evidence collection. Document configuration changes, exceptions, validation results, and remediation activities. Follow approved change, security, risk, and governance processes.
  • Operational Support, Troubleshooting, Backup and Recovery: Troubleshoot infrastructure issues involving servers, virtualization, storage, backup and recovery, operating systems, cloud services, authentication, and supporting dependencies. Perform and validate server maintenance, backup, restoration, recovery, patching, monitoring, and infrastructure health activities. Participate in incident and problem management and coordinate with internal teams and vendors as appropriate.
  • Documentation, Automation, and Knowledge Management: Create and maintain system documentation, architecture information, configuration records, operating procedures, implementation records, and knowledge articles. Maintain appropriate SDLC and operational evidence throughout the lifecycle of supported systems. Use scripting and automation where appropriate to improve repeatability, reliability, and operational efficiency. Participate in knowledge sharing and cross-training across the Systems Engineering team.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Highschool Diploma or GED required. Vocational or technical degree/Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required.
  • Experience can be substituted for the education above: 10 or more years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience administering and troubleshooting enterprise server and infrastructure environments.
  • Experience with enterprise virtualization technologies.
  • Knowledge of enterprise storage, backup, restoration, and disaster recovery concepts.
  • Linux systems administration experience and working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server a plus.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure or comparable cloud infrastructure and hybrid-cloud concepts.
  • Familiarity with VMware virtualization technologies.
  • Familiarity with Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with Nasuni enterprise file data platforms.
  • Familiarity with NIST SP 800-171 requirements.
  • Knowledge of Active Directory and enterprise authentication concepts.
  • Understanding of infrastructure security concepts, including system hardening, vulnerability remediation, access controls, logging, monitoring, patching, and secure administration.
  • Experience with or familiarity with formal incident, change, configuration, and lifecycle management practices.
  • Ability to create and maintain clear technical and operational documentation.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and progressively assume responsibility for complex infrastructure systems.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned responsibilities while collaborating effectively with other technical teams, vendors, and business partners.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CompTIA Security+ certification required.
  • Vendor training/certification preferred (e.g. Cisco CCIE) but not required.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $77,600-$125,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
