About the Job

We are looking for a new teammate like you if you are:

  • An enthusiastic storyteller and media consumer,
  • An honest and positive teammate excited to contribute in a variety of ways to a successful and supportive team,
  • A creative thinker, willing to innovate, experiment, and try new things,
  • Eager to be part of an organization that improves the lives of Minnesotans and people around the world, today and into the future,
  • Seeking experiences with leaders and experts at all levels of a large, diverse and mission-driven organization.

The communications team at the University of Minnesota Research and Innovation Office (RIO) is seeking a Communications Specialist, reporting to RIO's Internal Communications Director. This position will lead communications that support the University's strategic vision for becoming a Spatial University - bringing greater visibility to the people, projects, and partnerships that use spatial thinking and geospatial technologies to address real-world challenges.

Working closely with U-Spatial, GeoCommunities, and the many colleges, centers, and campuses engaged in geospatial research and practice, this role will develop a cohesive communications strategy that connects these efforts through compelling stories, engaging content, and data-driven visualizations. The goal is to build awareness of the University's geospatial strengths, foster collaboration across all UMN campuses, and inspire broader participation among faculty, staff, and students.

This work extends beyond promoting any one program. It is about showcasing the University's entire geospatial community, highlighting how spatial thinking and the "science of where" contribute to teaching, research, outreach, and innovation across disciplines. The position will also support communications surrounding the University's Elevate Extraordinary Strategic Plan using maps and storytelling to demonstrate the impact of strategic initiatives and help audiences see the connections across the University's work.

Please note: This position is not eligible for H-1B visa sponsorship.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist is an integral part of a small, multi-skilled, communications team that serves the vice president for research and innovation, provides communications, marketing, and public relations services for RIO administrative and academic units, and, more broadly, champions the impact that the University's research mission has-in Minnesota and beyond-and the special role that research universities play in our society.

40% Content Creation and Strategic Storytelling

  • Develops and implements communications strategies that align with University priorities and amplify the value of spatial thinking and tools.
  • Seeks out and identifies relevant, systemwide UMN spatial-related research stories to feature via RIO and other UMN communication channels.
  • Writes, edits, and/or coordinates production of content for website, news releases, speeches, newsletters, mass email, marketing collateral, and other outlets to highlight geospatial-related activities across the university.
  • Reviews materials for grammatical and stylistic accuracy, branding requirements, message consistency, and clarity of presentation.
  • Collaborates with RIO Communications and UMarComm team members to establish editorial calendars and pitch story ideas.

30% Digital Communications, Social Media, and Event Marketing

  • Compiles and assembles regular communications aimed at partners and stakeholders.
  • Establishes and manages social media accounts that highlight and amplify University spatial-related research stories, messaging, and visuals.
  • Creates basic graphics and images for use in social media and news stories in coordination with the RIO communications/branding team.
  • Provides support planning/marketing key events and attends events and takes photos for use in social media and news stories.

30% Website Management and Media Relations Support

  • Establishes/assists with the further development and maintenance of the GeoCommunities, LINC, U-Spatial and other related unit websites in collaboration with RIO website project manager and/or outside vendors.
  • Works with RIO Communications, University Marketing Communications and college/campus communications professionals to develop successful media pitches that amplify spatial-related research stories and messaging.
  • Undertakes related support activities, such as recording media placements, tracking metrics, maintaining project status reports, handling information requests, and other tasks as assigned.
