Responsibilities

Supervision and support of adolescents (individually and in groups) at all times; Assistance to each adolescent in working with a group and in handling individual problems; Administration of support and setting of limits for behavior; and documentation of the adolescent's progress, identification of the possible need for professional services, and communication of such findings to professional staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Arrive to work on time and in a mental and emotional state conducive to providing care in a therapeutic environment
  • Receive instruction and direction in a professionally receptive manner
  • Refrain from behavior that contradicts the provision of therapeutic care, to include, profanity, gossip, conversations unrelated to work or providing care within hearing range of residents, engaging in topics that are contra-therapeutic, and any other behavior, action, interaction or reaction that is contradictory to the Newport Academy Employee Handbook
  • Facilitate residential daily schedule including participating in, and providing support to residents, to include but not limited to, activities such as chores, deep clean, meal service, laundry service, groups, activities, and events
  • Practice safe and legal vehicle practices when operating your personal vehicle near any Newport Academy property
  • Practice safe and legal vehicle practices at all times when operating a company vehicle regardless of residents being in the vehicle or not
  • Provide transportation to residents for community outings and meetings
  • Know where all assigned residents are and what they are doing at all times
  • Practice compliance with all record keeping, checklist assignments, assigned documentation, and any other assigned duties
  • Remain current and up to date on all trainings required to maintain employment with Newport Academy
  • Manifest sound judgment at all times to include what is done and what is said
  • Display respect for the program of Newport Academy at all times, to include our philosophy, our practices, and our beliefs as a company and as a provider of care
  • Is courteous, responsive, and provides engaged hospitality to all internal and external customers
  • Communicate with accuracy, honesty, integrity, compassion and respect to others at all times
  • Dedicate time, energy, and effort to professional growth and development by taking ownership of knowing what you need to know so that you can carry out your duties in a safe and therapeutic manner that is in alignment with Newport Academy and our provision of care.
  • Helps to meet the goals/objectives of any required individualized service plans

Other Related Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to hold structure within the house, set limits and enforce boundaries with residents.
  • Ability to observe interactions and intervene at the earliest point of conflict to prevent crisis
  • Ability to communicate with residents with a positive tone in a supportive manner, creating a nurturing safe environment for them to share their feelings.
  • Ability to appreciate and value each resident by being nurturing, compassionate individuals who are active listeners who care about each resident. To be sensitive to, accept and value the cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity of the residents and hold each resident and their family in high regard.
  • Ability to multi-task while managing emotional states remaining calm and practicing patience.

Qualifications

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education/Experience Required: H.S. Degree or GED required and 6 months of experience working with children; associates degree and three months working with children; bachelor's level degree in human services preferred;

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, lift and move constantly during working hours.
