Job Summary

Under the direction of the Quality Assurance Manager, this position is responsible for the quality assurance program for the Department's clinical and anatomic laboratories, which operate 24 hours/day and 7 days/week. This individual develops and implements dynamic and efficient quality monitoring infrastructures that allow ongoing integration and improvement of all processes needed to provide accountable, responsive and patient focused high quality services. Incumbent provides daily laboratory quality management including setting benchmarks, developing key quality and performance indicators, and meeting all regulatory standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • California State License for Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist) must be current and renewed as required.
  • Bachelor of Science in a chemical or biological science or related field.
  • Knowledge of licensing, accrediting and regulatory requirements pertaining to the clinical laboratory, including State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission (JC), AABB, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
  • General technical knowledge of Clinical and Anatomic Pathology laboratory sections, including Transfusion Services, Chemistry, Hematology, Hemostasis, Point of Care, Microbiology, Special Chemistry, Toxicology, Immunology, Flow Cytometry, Molecular Pathology, Cytology, Surgical Pathology (Gross Room) and Histology.
  • Knowledge of Principles of Community, Customer Service principles, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and patient confidentiality, privacy, and security.
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance, Quality Systems and Quality Improvement principles.
  • Ability to write technical and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of UCDH safety policies and procedures, including product notification/recall processes, Standard Precautions, OSHA regulations.
  • Excellent problem resolution skills.
  • Excellent time-management skills.
  • Excellent data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation skills to carry out complex analytic projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Proficient in office software (word processing, spreadsheets, visual presentation tools), Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Knowledge of Principles of Community, Customer Service principles, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and patient confidentiality, privacy and security.

he Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse, multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in public health, education, technology and research. UC Davis is leading the way in diagnosing, treating, and ultimately preventing disease. Pathology brings these efforts together with education and patient care to transform the field. This position sets the highest standards for professionalism and competency in providing high quality customer service, diagnostic and therapeutic care to patients within UCDH and its affiliates. Our laboratories are licensed by the State of California, certified by CLIA, accredited by College of American Pathologists (CAP) and AABB., and located in three distinct facilities: 1) Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion (SESP); 2) Pathology Building; and 3) Specialty Testing Center (STC). The department is one of UCDH's largest ancillary services with annual gross revenues of over $415M, expenses of approximately $65M, and more than 350 overall employees in the department's clinical and academic sections. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's mission is to provide high quality patient/physician services, to maintain excellence of the educational programs, and to perform scholarly research and development when appropriate. These objectives are to be met within the limits of resources available with emphasis on cost effectiveness and innovation.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This is a Monday - Friday, day shift position. Incumbent must be willing to work variable shifts and take call as needed on days, evening, nights, weekends, holidays and to work overtime within UCDH Policy and Procedures.

This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
