International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The IRC in New Jersey seeks volunteer tutors to support English language learners among recently arrived youth refugees who have fled persecution in their home country and are rebuilding their lives in New Jersey. IRC will pair tutors with students based on mutual availability. Tutors may support students during individual 1:1 in-home tutoring. Tutors are academic coaches and positive role models who want to help IRC youth succeed in school. Tutors are not people who are expected to receive, give, or loan money.

TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES: * Attend an onsite orientation at the IRC Elizabeth office and complete associated IRC online trainings/background check * One on one individualized tutoring * Tutors should be able to create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants * Interact with diverse populations effectively * Tutor assigned students at least 1.5-2 hours per week for a duration of the school year (6 months) * Communicate regularly with the Youth Program Specialist and parents/guardians regarding student's progress, problems, etc. * Comply with office policies and program procedures

* Have reliable transportation to and from the assigned student's home twice a week, each week for the duration of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Proven ability to build community within individualized session and cultivate students commitment to academic learning * Timely documentation and submission of the Tutor Log after each individualized tutoring session * Thorough, detailed knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability to clearly explain all verbs, tenses and parts of speech * Ability to interact with diverse populations and empathize with people unfamiliar with local culture * Demonstrated ability to work independently in a multicultural environment * Ethical and professional conduct that facilitates the building of a respectful, trusting, and collaborative relationship with program staff and students * Arabic, Dari, Spanish, Pashto, and/or Swahili speaking preferred
