Cardiology Inpatient Advanced Practice Provider Position

The Children's National Heart Center is recruiting an advanced practice provider (APP) to join the inpatient cardiology service.

This APP will manage cardiology patients on the heart and kidney unit and work collaboratively with the inpatient team which consists of residents, fellows, APPs and cardiology attendings. Clinical duties include: daily rounding, interpretation of diagnostic and laboratory results, medication ordering and adjustments, development of the plan of care, and discharge planning and coordination. Other responsibilities include facilitating throughput initiatives to help with timely ICU transfers and discharging patients to home. This position is unique in its potential to contribute to research and quality improvement with several QI projects already underway on the unit. Strong interpersonal skills and team building mindset are essential in this position.

Prior cardiology knowledge is advantageous but not required; applicants with a strong motivation to learn congenital heart disease and an interest in quality improvement are encouraged. Advance your career and make a difference in the rewarding field of congenital heart disease!

The Advanced Practice Provider is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists) or Physician Assistant who practices within their scope of practice as appropriate in their jurisdictional area and in accordance with their organizational Medical Staff Bylaws. The provider is responsible for the management of care to patients including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care. Provides leadership and consultation with their respective clinical area through participation in division/department initiatives and mentorship of others. Participates in division/departmental and organization wide initiatives to represent advanced practice and leverage the role of the advanced practice provider.

Qualifications Minimum Education
Master's Degree Master's or Doctoral degree as Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant from an accredited University and eligibility for medical staff credentialing (Required)

0 years Minimum of 0 years of experience as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

Strong knowledge of clinical specialty and services.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure in state(s) of clinical practice (Required) Or
Physician Assistant National board certification (Required) And
CDS and DEA in state(s) of clinical practice. BLS certified. (Required)
In areas that service young adult populations, Board Certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Clinical
  • Assess, diagnose, monitor and promote clinical status of each patient utilizing evidenced based practice and medical knowledge.
  • Develops appropriate plan of care.
  • Writes patient care orders, prescribes therapy, and provides necessary home care orders as needed.
  • Identifies significant changes in patient status using physical exam, lab values, diagnostic tests, and patient/family input.
  • Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Performs procedures as needed after obtaining appropriate credentialing.
  • Participates in and leads multidisciplinary patient care and planning conferences.
  • Is a clinical resource for patient, parents and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Communicates and escalates clinical/administrative issues as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with nursing, medicine, and other members of the healthcare team to regularly ensure quality patient care.
Administrative
  • Serves as a clinical preceptor to APRN or PA students.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for staff in patient care issues.
  • Provides formal/informal educational presentation to staff on areas of expertise.
  • Participates in quality improvement work for the department.
