The Wiemels Laboratory studies the causes and outcomes of cancers. In support of these studies the laboratory extracts high quality DNA and proteins from a large number subject samples and prepares and runs them for a number of downstream applications, including DNA array analysis and sequencing, performed by external vendors. The Research Laboratory Technician will support this essential function of our lab, under the supervision of the lab manager and the principal investigator.

Under direct supervision and with training provided, the individual will extract high quality DNA and protein samples using manual or machine assisted techniques. Samples will include but will not be limited to: blood spots, formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tumor scrolls and slides, frozen whole blood samples, and saliva. The Technician will be trained to assess sample characteristics like DNA concentration, contamination, and size using NanoDrop UV spectrophotometric readings, Quant-iT PicoGreen dsDNA Fluorescence chemistry, electrophoretic migration, and PCR.

The Technician will use appropriate lab instrumentation to perform all analyses, store and retrieve specimens in the laboratory's -80C and liquid nitrogen sample freezers in accordance with the established archiving system. The individual will keep detailed physical and electronic records in Excel of essential sample and study information. The Technician will use Microsoft OS based software, routinely exporting and importing data files. The individual will routinely perform calculations in Microsoft Excel and prepare reports with Microsoft Office and Power Point software. Additional sample tracking software and database will be utilized as appropriate. The Research Technician will also order laboratory supplies as necessary and work with the Project Manager to help track and store laboratory samples.

Required skills for this position include:

* Associates degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
* Course work in Molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction and PCR amplification
* Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques
* Demonstrated excellent oral/written communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and detailed records
* Demonstrated ability to prioritize and efficiently complete tasks within a given timeframe
* Developed computer skills, especially with Microsoft Excel

Preferred skills include:

* BA/BS degree in Biological Sciences
* Demonstrated ability to process biological specimens
* Demonstrated ability to execute established laboratory protocols
* Demonstrated ability to extract DNA from Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded tissues
* Demonstrated ability to perform Taqman Genotyping

* Prior experience with Immunoassays such as Luminex
* Knowledge of automated instrumentation
* Ability to work in a BSL2 laboratory

The hourly rate range for this position is $20.18 - $25.00.
