Carnegie Mellon University: Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences: Statistics Location Pittsburgh, PA Open Date Jul 26, 2024 Description The Department of Statistics & Data Science at Carnegie Mellon University (https://www.cmu.edu/dietrich/statistics-datascience/index.html) invites applications for adjunct instructor(s) to teach Master's and Undergraduate course(s) within the department's Undergraduate and Graduate programs. The Department is seeking candidate(s) with a passion for Statistics and/or Data Science and a desire to make a significant impact on the Department's educational mission. We are looking for candidate(s) who are effective educators and will contribute to our thriving, modern programs. Successful candidate(s) will be expected to have strong teaching skills and subject matter expertise in algorithmic trading, execution algorithms, and high-frequency trading (HFT) algorithms. We welcome applicants with practical experience in the field, with a preference for prior experience teaching at an accredited higher education institution. The teaching load for this part-time position is one class per semester. Courses run for fifteen weeks with a one-week mid-semester break, and consist of approximately 38 hours of instruction content. Courses conclude with either a final exam or a final project, but the instructor is allowed some discretion in course design. Lectures can be pre-recorded and delivered via hybrid or asynchronous modalities. This position can flexibly accommodate supplemental technology-enabled synchronous student support (eg Piazza or comparable equivalent) within core schedule hours between 8:00am and 8:50pm Eastern Standard/Daylight Time as a primary means of student support for the course(s). Instructors will receive approximately 10-12 hours per week of TA support to help with grading. Instructors are expected to contribute to the Undergraduate and Graduate programs within the Department by participating in monthly program-level faculty meetings, monthly graduate program meetings to discuss student progress, and will provide predictable and sufficient support for students by reasonably accommodating ad-hoc, virtual synchronous office hour/student meeting support to meet with course-enrolled students as warranted in order to enable and validate successful acquisition of the skills and competencies aligned with course learning goals. Instructor(s) will endeavor to continuously improve the student experience through on-going collaborative activities focused on developing/refining/improving the curriculum, building or identifying usable data sets, and contributing domain-specific knowledge capital to the Department knowledge repositories relevant to assisting students with navigating modern industry talent acquisition processes (ie, supporting materials to assist students with navigating case studies, brainteasers, and logic challenges common in quantitative financial sector job applications). Instructors are responsible for leveraging their expertise to deliver education services to students through: * Preparing curriculum aligned with Program learning goals and standards * Preparing course(s)-specific plans and materials * Delivering course(s) * Monitoring student progress/attendance * Advising students * Assessing student understanding and retention of course-level concepts * Recording grades and submitting reports Carnegie Mellon Statistics & Data Science is world-renowned for the significance of its contributions to statistical theory and practice and for its outstanding interdisciplinary applied research. The instructor should be a practitioner or academic with direct experience with the topic to be covered. Recent experience in teaching prior statistics courses at the college/university level preferred.
