Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
High school graduate or completion of GED; five (5) years experience in general maintenance and carpentry. Trained knowledge of the standard practices and methods of carpentry based on NC State and Greensboro City building codes. Trained in the operation of tools and materials utilized on construction of wooden articles. Skilled in the use of carpentry hand tools and machines. Ability to read and work from blueprints, drawings, and sketches. Ability to perform heavy tasks. At least two (2) years experience in performing cleaning work and other related manual labor and one (1) year of progressive experience in the performance of tasks associated with at least two (2) semi-skilled trade areas or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Maintenance Mechanic performs building maintenance and repairs. Incumbent performs general carpentry in the construction, repair and alteration of floors, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, desks and cabinets; selects, cuts and trims lumber to size to make furniture and repairs. This position assembles furniture, hangs wallpaper, installs ceiling tile and glass, removes and replaces air conditioners where needed. The incumbent aids in repairing and/or replacing faulty plumbing and other minor plumbing repairs, (i.e. unplugs stopped up drains, puts on faucets, repairs leaks, replaces commode seats, shower heads). Mixes and matches paint and applies paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, stain and spray.

The incumbent needs to be skilled at operating basic tools and equipment of assigned trade(s), have knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment, and a general knowledge of the principals and techniques of a variety of moderately complex trades
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Student Center serves as the principal site for student programming and offers office accommodations for student leadership, the University Event Center, Aggie One-Card, Aggie Sit-in and a convenience store. In addition, it offers an array of services, conveniences and amenities for students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests.
Work Hours 7:00am -3:30pm, with occasional weekend hours based on facility needs

Duties
Performs a variety of recurring and related tasks/functions using easily understood steps/processes/functions/applications to perform corrective and preventive maintenance or construction of facilities
Provides technical assistance to others by troubleshooting simple facilities maintenance issues and determining their cause

Daily check of Mechanical Room to inspect HVAC system for leaks on pumps and pipes.

Maintenance of non-public areas

Maintain an inventory of tools and filters for air handling units.
