Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The primary responsibilities for this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate Sociology courses, conducting research, student advising, student mentoring and recruitment, curriculum development, conducting scholarly activities and other activities associated with teaching and research. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, engaging in program development, program assessment, submitting proposals for external funding and service to the Department, College and University as needed.
This position is expected to be hired at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level, based on education and experience.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina A&T is a 1890 land grant and doctoral-research university, where scholars are engaged in transformative teaching and learning, civic-outreach, interdisciplinary research and innovative solutions to global challenges as envisioned in N.C. A&T's Vision, 2023. As the largest HBCU in the nation, our enrollment is more than 13,000 students and our workforce includes more than 2,000 employees. North Carolina A&T State University offers over 90-degree programs at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels through eight academic colleges. The University is one of the sixteen constituent units of the University of North Carolina ( UNC) system and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools ( SACS). The strategic vision focuses the University on interdisciplinary scholarly activities in a learner-centered environment.
The John R and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences offers baccalaureate degree programs in Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Speech, and Health Services Management. The College is also home to three graduate programs, MS in Health Psychology, MS in Social Work, a PhD in Social Work, and MS in Physician Assistant Studies. Graduate programs in the pipeline include a PhD in Sociology, PhD in Applied Psychology, and Doctor of Nursing Practice ( DNP). Through innovative programs, high impact, and student-centered pedagogy, faculty in the Hairston college foster an inter-professional learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students. Social justice and promotion of health equity are integral components of the mission of the college. Consistent with this mission, the college welcomes applicants representing the full diversity of intellectual perspectives, life experiences, social-demographic, and political-cultural-backgrounds.
The Department of Sociology and Social Work is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners who prepare students to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Degree options include: the Bachelor of Sociology, the Bachelor of Social Work, a Joint Master of Social Work Degree and a Joint Ph.D. in Social Work (offered with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). Masters and PhD programs in Sociology are currently being development. We are committed to excellence in education by preparing our students to face complex social problems with knowledge of evidenced based practice and creative solutions. We have approximately 90 Sociology students, 249 undergraduate Social Work students, and 78 graduate Social Work students.
Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in Sociology is required.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Evidence of research productivity and extramural funding are preferred.
