Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) seeks an accomplished and innovative physician leader to serve as its next Director of Clinical Medicine at University Health Services (UHS). The Director of Clinical Medicine will provide strategic direction and oversight for medical care at UW-Madison while serving as a compassionate clinician, thought partner and an integral partner across UHS for all work related to health and wellness. The Director of Clinical Medicine will bring a passion for providing medical services tailored to student's needs and support and champion an integrated and holistic care model. The Director of Clinical Medicine will advance a respectful and healthy work environment that facilitates employee engagement for a varied workforce and actively promotes social justice values. They will support the overarching UHS mission of promoting student's academic and personal success through an integrated model of medical, mental health, and prevention activities and services.

UHS is the student health center at UW-Madison, and it provides comprehensive medical and mental health care, and prevention services to members of the UW-Madison campus community.

The Director of Clinical Medicine reports to the Medical Services Director and will be a collaborative member of the Medical Services team as a culture of belonging grows for the staff. The Director of Clinical Medicine is responsible for supporting physicians and advanced practice professional providers in their growth and development as clinicians as well as ensuring their success in providing high-quality evidence-based medical care to patients. The Director of Clinical Medicine will collaborate with primary care and gynecology clinical leadership on the supervision and development of all providers and the clinical practice across Medical Services clinics. The position has direct supervisory experience for three clinical leaders who, in turn, oversee a multidisciplinary medical team that includes primary care, gynecology, sexual health, travel medicine, allergy and immunization, physical therapy, and athletic training. The Director of Clinical Medicine must be an effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communicator with the ability to effectively interact with diverse populations and work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. The successful candidate must hold the earned degree of MD or DO and be currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a physician in the State of Wisconsin.

The Director of Clinical Medicine will be a relationship builder across UHS, student affairs, and the University of Wisconsin, championing the work of Medical Services, exploring potential partnerships, and ensuring a shared commitment to student and staff health and wellbeing.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE NEXT DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL MEDICINE

--Together with the Executive Director of University Health Services and Medical Services Director, develop and support a strategic planning process focused on ensuring a high-quality healthcare experience for all UW-Madison Students.

--Build and support a collaborative and collegial workplace and support the recruitment and retention of a talented team of diverse healthcare providers.

--Through recruitment and training of staff, ensure the provision of accessible, inclusive, and culturally competent healthcare to all UW-Madison students.

--Deepen the UHS and Medical Services commitment to integrated care through partnerships with Mental Health Services, Health Promotion, and other entities in and out of student affairs with a focus on student health and well-being.

--Develop and support a culture of evidence-based decision-making to ensure successful and equitable care for students and the operational effectiveness of UHS Medical Services.

--Participate in UHS training programs for health professions students by serving as clinical preceptor, developing, and delivering educational curricula to health profession learners as well as UHS medical providers.


Responsibilities:

This position is 50-60% direct clinical care and 40-50% administrative activities (which could vary based on clinical and administrative needs at a given time).

Direct Clinical Care and Student Experience Duties (50-60%):
-Provide clinical care to UHS Medical Services patients.
-Collaborate with other UHS providers, including mental health providers, on student care.
-Maintain timely electronic medical records.
-Oversees provider practice and clinical services in collaboration with primary care, gynecology, sexual health and community health leadership.
-Oversees professional credentialing, privileging, and peer review processes.
-Supports clinical response to communicable disease concerns on the UW-Madison campus in collaboration with the Medical Services Director.
-Serves as a clinical resource to providers throughout UHS.
-Provides, approves, and oversees implementation of health policies and protocols within UHS in coordination with Medical Services Leadership.
-Collaborate closely with supervisors overseeing physicians and APPs across departments to provide cross coverage of supervision, as appropriate and as needed.
-Participate in the development and delivery of programs to meet the needs of a college population.
-Participate in UHS training programs for health professions students by serving as a clinical preceptor, developing, and delivering educational curricula to health profession learners as well as UHS medical providers.

Administrative Duties (40-50%):
-Conduct bi-annual performance and/or growth and development evaluations for direct reports, including, but not limited to, a review and analysis of data such as patient, staff and peer evaluations, provider self-evaluations, chart review, timely documentation etc.
-Participate in UHS committees and workgroups as requested.
-Represent UHS at meetings, organizations or in liaison relationships within UHS and throughout the UW-Madison campus as assigned by the Medical Services Director.

Education:

Required:
MD degree, with completed residency in Pediatrics (additional specialization in Adolescent Medicine required), Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, or Internal Medicine.


Qualifications:

Required:
--Three years post-training clinical experience in Pediatrics (additional specialization in Adolescent Medicine required), Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, or related field required.

Preferred:
--Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience
--Experience in college/student health service or similar environment

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following qualities:
--A demonstrated interest in or commitment to adolescent medicine or student health

--Knowledge and understanding of health care delivery, including relevant laws and regulations

--Ability to effectively lead and supervise a staff with a variety of professional credentials and
subject matter expertise within a complex organization, including effective change management

--Ability to provide counsel and remain neutral in situations involving interpersonal conflict, make positive and constructive recommendations, and take a proactive approach toward promoting more efficient and effective systems and processes

--Demonstrated commitment to and experience successfully advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion and the development of an inclusive workplace

--Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies across the university, outside agencies, and other organizations

--Experience overseeing professional credentialing, privileging, and the peer review process

Current Licensure or eligibility to become licensed as a physician in the state of Wisconsin. Board Certification in Primary Specialty required. Board Eligible physicians will be considered only during their 1st post-graduate year.

University Health Services is an integrated university health system within the Division of Student Affairs, led by Executive Director (ED), Jake Baggott, who joined UW-Madison in 2019. Students access UHS's health services both on the main campus and at the Lakeshore Clinic in Dejope Hall.

Medical Services offers high-quality medical care to all UW-Madison students. The Medical Services team has 8 physicians, 14 advanced practice providers, and 10 staff with specialties in primary care, gynecology, sexual health, travel medicine, allergy and immunization, and physical therapy. Mental Health Services offers an open, safe, and confidential environment to help students through issues that may interfere with their development, well-being, and academic productivity. Mental Health Services has 74 providers and a staff of 83. Mental Health Services offers a variety of services at no cost to students, including individual, couple/partner, and group counseling, and victim advocacy at no cost. Outreach programming and stress management programming are also offered at no cost. UHS offers 24/7 crisis services. Psychiatry services are also available for medication management. Mental Health Services also houses the Integrated Behavioral Health Program. That program takes direct referrals from Medical Services for somatic concerns that have a mental health component or when there are other mental health needs. The Prevention and Campus Health Initiatives unit provides population-based prevention and health promotion strategy to the UW-Madison community. UHS prevention professionals work to address important campus health issues such as sexual and relationship violence, alcohol and other drug misuse, suicide, and wellness through a health equity and social justice lens.
