Position Summary

The University of New Mexico is looking to fill a Medical Physicist position in Radiation Oncology. This position will be with the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center in Albuquerque, NM, the only New Mexico academic healthcare facility dedicated to both cancer research and patient care. We are one of just 51 cancer centers in the United States to achieve Comprehensive designation by the NCI.

We are seeking a motivated medical physicist to be part of a medical physics team consisting of four medical physicists and five medical dosimetrists lead by a Director of Medical Physics. The ideal candidate should have strong technical and communication skills along with an interest in translational research and teaching. Enthusiasm about innovation, process improvement and patient safety are necessary as well.

The Cancer Center currently has two Elekta linear accelerators, with an Elekta Versa HD going live in the fall of 2023. An active HDR program is also present, using the Elekta Flexitron suite. Raystation is used as the treatment planning system. The department will be expanding to four linear accelerators and an MR linac in the next few years. In addition to the clinical responsibilities, participation in a CAMPEP approved MS program in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and research are additional components of the position. Building radiation oncology CAMPEP approved Radiation Therapy residency program is also in the initial phases. Research opportunities are available for interested candidates. Faculty appointments in the department of internal medicine will be considered for qualified candidate.

This position practices under indirect supervision and will provide professional medical physics services for a principal radiation research/therapy unit of Radiation Oncology. Evaluates and interprets medical radiation treatment prescriptions. Collaborates with medical providers in the design and modification of effective radiation treatments for patients. Supervises treatment plans. Provides quality assurance, participates in development and execution of equipment monitoring, calibration, and safety surveys. Supervises patient setups and treatment delivery as necessary. As directed, responsible for coordinated research efforts in clinical radiotherapy. As directed, manages the implementation of new technologies and meets expected timelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS, PhD, or equivalent degree or related sciences,
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics or related sciences
  • Three years of clinical experience
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity,
