Job Summary:

The Thoracic Surgery Division at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, is actively seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Fellow position specializing in either the immunology of organ transplantation or lung diseases.

Successful candidates will join a dynamic and multidisciplinary research team focusing on using contemporary research tools include single cell transcriptomics, proteomics, intravital imaging, and multichannel flow cytometry, all complemented by bioinformatics and computational biology techniques. Our primary focus is on uncovering the immunopathogenesis of allograft dysfunction and rejection, with a specific emphasis on identifying clinically relevant mechanisms in lung transplant utilizing animal models.

We anticipate the start date for this position to be October 1st, 2024, or potentially earlier.

Qualifications for this role include a PhD/MD degree in Immunology, Biology, Biomedical Science, Transplant, or a closely related field. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who demonstrates creativity and independence in their thinking.

Our research team boasts a robust blend of clinical and research expertise, with well-established laboratory approaches and techniques for in vitro characterization and animal models of disease. Collaborators within our group hail from various divisions, including thoracic surgery, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, and immunology.

Please note: Flexible work hours are important as some experiments require night time or weekend supervision- this scenario would be offset by appropriate time off.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Independently plan, perform, and analyze data from animal and cell culture experiments; Develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols; Develop and characterize novel biomaterials for therapeutic delivery.
  • Work and communicate with internal and external research collaborators
  • To supervise research residents, students, and laboratory technicians working on collaborative projects in the lab
  • To help write and contribute to publications and grant proposals resulting from research done in the lab as well as present findings at national and international meetings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • We seek highly motivated postdoctoral fellows with recent PhD or MD degree who are self-starters, good communicators and independent problem solvers. and animal model skills are required.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Candidates should have demonstrated the ability to be highly motivated and organized, detail-oriented, and work independently.
  • Candidates should have excellent command of the English language (spoken and written), and must be eligible to work in the US.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Immunology background or Mouse research experience

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in immunology and cell biology, particularly those with a focus on lung medicine.
