The Cornell University animal behavior medicine residency program is a three-year intensive specialty training program accredited by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB). It is supported by two board-certified veterinary behaviorists and one trainer.

This position is sponsored by the Duffield Institute for Animal Behavior, which is endowed by a $12.1M grant from the Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation, ensuring that the institute will be a world leader in advancing the discipline of animal behavior and will build on Cornell's expertise to better understand animal behavior and improve the lives of pets and people who share their lives with them.

The behavior service has a high caseload; small animals make up most of it, with some equine, exotic animal, and lab animal consultations. The residents will see referral behavior cases at the Behavior specialty clinic at Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA), primary behavior cases at Cornell Small Animal Community Practice (SACP) and participate in the shelter medicine outreach program.

In accordance with ACVB requirements, the resident will participate in teaching veterinary students and house officers. The residency includes two-week clinical rotations in neurology and one-week rotation in dermatology and internal medicine. The schedule will support time for coursework, journal club, book club, and research project.

Requirements:

  • The candidate must hold a DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Completion of a one-year internship program is required or equivalent in practice.
  • The ideal candidate is independent, highly motivated, a good communicator, and a strong team player.
  • Pre-employment background check will be required
  • Non-compete agreement required.

Foreign national applicants must provide an English Language proficiency documentation. Certified translations and US third party equivalency certification of transcripts and veterinary degree. Please note that while licensure is recommended, it is not required as long as you are a graduate of a "school of veterinary medicine" accredited in any state or country. We do not require that you provide proof of NAVLE, PAVE or ECFVG in order to apply.

*English proficiency must be provided by applicants from countries where English is not the only official language. Acceptable proofs are:

These letters should ideally address aptitude and performance pertinent to clinical skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine, ability to apply knowledge in the clinical setting, ability to communicate and work with others, and scientific research.
