Job Summary

Trimble's construction group develops positioning and control products for earthmoving and paving machines, using technologies such as GPS, optical total stations, lasers, and sonics. The products are utilized in a range of construction and mining applications where the operator of the machine benefits from having accurate horizontal and vertical guidance.

The System Engineer is responsible for the specification, design, and documentation of future machine autonomy systems. The system engineer works directly with marketing, multi-discipline engineering teams, and machine OEMs to develop innovative, high quality products. The position requires practical application of electrical, software, and mechanical engineering skills. The system engineer exercises excellent interpersonal skills to work within ambiguous situations, helping transform requirements into product strategy and technical direction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn and understand Trimble's underlying functional and safety requirements.

  • Ensure OEM project proposals align with Trimble's functional and safety standards.

  • Collaborate with OEMs and internal engineering teams to implement existing APIs and specify new or modified APIs.

  • Coordinate efforts across various groups to ensure seamless integration of Trimble technologies into OEM machinery.

  • Support OEMs in the effective utilization of Trimble's technologies, driving project success and innovation.

  • Define J1939 CAN communication interfaces including electrical implementation, bus loading analyses, and messaging protocols

  • Define system Ethernet and WiFi networks including layout, system usage, security, and messaging

  • Provide technical input for mobile machinery positioning and control system verification testing

  • Generate and maintain professional grade design documentation

  • Travel (including international) is less than 40%

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Strong understanding of API development and integration.

    • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java.

    • Experience with cloud services and solutions.

  • Engineering Knowledge:

    • Background in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.

    • Knowledge of functional and safety requirements in engineering projects.

    • Familiarity with construction machinery and control systems.

  • Project Management:

    • Ability manage multiple projects and coordinate efforts across various teams.

    • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Analytical Skills:

    • Problem-solving skills to address and resolve technical challenges.

    • Ability to analyze project proposals for alignment with functional and safety requirements.

  • Communication:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with OEM partners and internal teams.

    • Ability to clearly explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Collaboration:

    • Strong interpersonal skills for working closely with OEMs and cross-functional teams.

    • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Adaptability:

    • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and timelines.

    • Willingness to continuously learn and update skills in line with technological advancements.

  • Technical Tools:

    • Proficiency in Google Worktools (e.g., Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive).

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in the construction or heavy machinery industry.

  • Experience with safety-critical systems and standards.

  • Familiarity with Trimble products and solutions.

This compensation range is based on a full time schedule.
