7am-3:30pm plus on call

The Cath Lab RN assists physicians in the delivery of patient care in the Cardiac Cath, Electrophysiology and Peripheral Vascular Labs. The RN is responsible for coordinating the care of patients and families that they care for utilizing the nursing process, and the skills that are part of their functions as a registered nurse. Summary of duties include: utilizing nursing knowledge for critical thinking, planning of care, evaluating response to care and planning for the needs of the patient and family. The Cardiac Cath Lab RN will provide high quality care, patient satisfaction, and cost effective care. The RN must be able to take call on a rotational basis with a response time within 30 minutes of the MI Alert being received.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

Qualifications:

Leadership:

  • Delegates nursing care activities and monitors care given by appropriate care team members in accordance with patient needs, and the team member's professional capabilities and qualifications.
  • Assists in creating a positive work environment by mentoring of staff/students, and working with team members to develop and facilitate initiatives to strive for positive outcomes in quality and care of patients.
  • Complies with all policies and procedures, and guides team members with compliance.
  • Reliable attendance is an expectation of the team member role, as well as a leader in the unit.

Professional Growth:

  • Assumes responsibility for continued growth in areas of competencies, lifelong learning and must participate on unit and hospital quality of care projects and /or Magnet Committees. Specialty certifications and continuing education are strongly encouraged.
  • Supports use of Evidenced Based Practice and incorporates best practices into daily care routine.
  • Participates in mandatory education and unit meetings per established guidelines.
  • Compiles with all safety goals, infection prevention and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Completes annual mandatory education.

Communication:

  • Communicates utilizing the FOCUS Values in all aspects of care and interactions with others.
  • Handoff of care incorporates information that is included in the SBAR, including all critical data about patient treatment and care, and also plan and goal of care including teaching needs of the patient and family. Patient/Family Centered Care is encouraged with both patient and family being updated and informed about all care needs.
  • Effectively communicates with all team members, physicians, ancillary staff and all customers. Verbal communication is clear and concise, and written communication is legible and done using approved abbreviations.
  • Provides patients/families with teaching throughout hospital stay for procedures and treatments while in the hospital, and to be prepared to care for home care needs. Referrals are done with appropriate disciplines to assure all patient/family needs are met.

Collaboration:

  • Practice indicates compliance with HIPAA, DNV, OSHA and all other regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible in meeting needs of the unit as a team member.
  • Works effectively with multidisciplinary team assessing needs of the patient/family, establishing goals for the patient/family, and also assists in development of quality improvements that may cross over from department to department.

Delivery of Care:

  • Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process, and demonstrates knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assists with ambulation of patients, and uses assist devices as appropriate to protect patient and staff member.
  • Documentation reflects complete information and accurate legal record of patient's care.
  • Follows compliance requirements for federally funded programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Compliance concerns are brought to the immediate attention of management or the Compliance Officer.

Other Functions:

  • Unit specific additional functions will be addressed in the competency checklist specific to the assigned unit. Additional certifications and requirements are unit based.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Manager or Organization.

Development & Patient Education

  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance nursing practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Graduate of accredited nursing program

BSN degree preferred

Experience:

Cath Lab or critical care experience preferred

Prefer one (1) year of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency in Critical Care.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to hire. Advanced Life Support (ACLS) certification within 6 months of hire. Completion of 2 hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually

Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Microsoft Office - basic computer skills.

Customer/patient focused.

Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities. May drive a UPH vehicle, rental or own vehicle.
