The Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Services, CU Denver Campus will be responsible for providing operational, programmatic and consultative professional Information Technology leadership to the Denver OIT team, and support to the Denver campus executive leadership team (Chancellor, Cabinet, Provost, CFO, CDO, Legal Counsel), as well as the senior administrators, IT Directors and staff across the CU Denver administrative units, and within the Denver campus schools and colleges.

This position is responsible for leading the Denver OIT team in the design, implementation and continuous improvement of IT initiatives and programs for the CU Denver campus. The employment scope for the Denver Campus includes approximately 1000 Faculty and 800 Staff. Programs span the full IT spectrum, from strategic to day-to-day operations, including service delivery and operations, CRM and academic technology, and planning, analysis, and change, including IT process improvements. In addition to the direct leadership responsibilities, this position provides indirect leadership to IT professionals in CU Denver's schools and colleges and serves as the liaison to the Auraria Higher Education Campus (AHEC), the Anschutz Medical Campus OIT team, and the University of Colorado system office and it's campuses. The position is involved in various CU Denver campus strategic and operational/tactical working groups, providing senior level, expert professional IT guidance and interpretation to Denver campus leadership on all IT matters, including compliance requirements, Regent and Campus policies, laws, and regulations.

Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Services

What you will do:




  • Apply knowledge of professional IT approaches and methods including theories and principles and knowledge of university policies and procedures which provides direction and guidance to direct reports and campus leadership.



  • Provide strategic leadership for all IT activity for employees and students, including advising on processes, monitoring best-practices and facilitating compliance, as necessary.



  • Serve as the strategic advisor on IT policies and procedures for University of Colorado Denver ensuring alignment with the State of Colorado and the University of Colorado. Manage change to ensure that policies are updated and aligned with both current and future strategic objectives.



  • Develop and implement department and university policies/initiatives which support and further CU Denver's mission, vision, and the Roadmap to 2030.



  • Develop IT services to address and anticipate the campus's business and operational needs.



  • Coach and develop IT leaders and employees on how to navigate and address complex IT issues.



  • Monitor OIT service and operational activities to ensure services are in accordance with University of Colorado policies and practices, and that the processes retain their integrity across all CU Denver schools, colleges, and administrative units.



  • Build a team with CU Denver personnel, and with peers across the University of Colorado and AHEC to address common OIT concerns and drive collaborative solutions that support system and campus-wide objectives.



  • Communicate closely as needed with faculty and staff in school/college/unit IT departments, university OIT department, external entities and affiliates regarding IT issues, ensuring solutions supports overall institutional strategy and goals.



  • Provide timely updates on emerging OIT issues for the campus, and on the evolving ecosystem of information technologies.



  • Lead strategic and tactical project management for high-priority IT initiatives and programs, ensuring alignment with CU Denver leadership's strategic priorities and objectives.



  • Develop and implement a strategic approach for integrating AI services across university operations with a focus on enhancing efficiency, decision-making, and productivity while ensuring AI tools are vetted for safety, security, privacy, and ethical standards.



  • Act as a first point of contact for IT staff in the CU Denver schools and colleges for a variety of system and technical issues and serve on cross-campus and cross-System committees to define processes, workflows and systems related to IT operational activities.



  • Track, monitor and analyze results of implemented programs to facilitate continuous effectiveness and improvement.



  • Attend all CU Denver Chancellor Cabinet meetings and work closely with the campus Business Operations leaders (SBAs) and IT Directors in the Denver schools and colleges on IT issues.



  • Represent CU Denver on system-wide committees related to IT, advocating for the campus' interests and contributing to the development of system-wide IT policies and initiatives.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)




  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, management/computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.



  • At least 10 years of management experience, including at least 2 years in a large-scale IT environment.



  • Experience as a CTO or a high-ranking technological leader in a complex system



  • Experience working in a highly collaborative environment.



  • Experience that supports best practices in the use of IT



  • Curiosity and continuous learning and improvement orientation



  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders and executives.




Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)




  • Advanced degree, in a related field



  • Experience developing future-focused technology solutions including analytics that enabled a university to improve equitable student outcomes.



  • Experience at research-intensive university




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities




  • Thought leadership focused on implementing CU Denver's Strategic Plan and its resulting strategic initiatives.



  • Knowledge of emerging technologies (particularly with regard to AI and information security), best practices, regulatory requirements, and change management strategies



  • A divergent thinker, capable of identifying solutions beyond the scope of traditional technology services.



  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic university environment with CU System-driven technology initiatives, multiple campus strategic initiatives and complex affiliate relationship including those on the Auraria Campus.

Conditions of Employment




  • Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.



  • This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.



  • This position requires an initial onsite presence on campus a minimum of 4 days a week.




Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $203,751-$225,199.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
